I just got back from 2 weeks in Maine and now have a coffee habit. Before the trip I woke up with a diet coke but that doesnt work in the wilds of down east. A cup or 2 of Green Mountain (or something like that) seemed to do the trick and didnt taste all that bad after a few days.

Now that I'm back I need to figure out how to make coffee at home. I'm looking for a single or small batch coffee make/system, any ideas?

i have a keurig and i like the k-cups. perfect for small doses of coffee.

Chris,

Finally something I can help out with on this forum!

I quizzed a barrista about coffee and he said the key is hot water. A lot of these fancy coffee pots simply don't get the water hot enough to extract the "good stuff" out of the bean.

Two simple solutions:

1. Buy a French Press($20), most look like a glass decanter (with a handle) from high school chemistry with a screen mesh plunger attached to the lid. Put two tablespoons of quality coffee per 8oz cup of water you intend to add. Pour just about to or just cooler than boiled water over the grounds and let steep for about 5 minutes. Place the lid with the plunger on it on the decanter and slowly push the grounds to the bottom of the decanter.

2. But a small expresso pot ($15). Fill the bottom half with water, place the sieve into the opening and fill with good grounds, screw upper "pot" on to lower half and place on stove on medium heat. When steam stops spewing out, remove from heat and you have expresso. Mix with 1 to 4 with just boiled hot water to make cafe americano.

You can google all this of course. The key is water just below boiling.

if you want something quick, cheap, and good, i agree on the french press

French press sucks. You spend as much time drinking as cleaning out the stupid beaker every time you make a cup.

I like the little coffee pod system. Costs a little more, but you won't be stuck in front of the sink every morning washing out day old grinds.

My wife got a free Senseo for sending them a picture of our previous coffie maker being used as a planter. She drinks coffee again so I may have a Senseo to give away. Let me know if you want.

How soon before the coffee snobs show up bitching about how "Starbucks is crap" and "don't bother"? Those guys make me lol because coffee is serious business!!!

If you are only doing 1-2 cups per day, I like the pod system. If not there are a ton of 4 cup makers out there. I love my Krups but it is rather old-school.
