Anyone know how to mod a Blaupunkt for Ipod?
 

I have a 1988 with the stock Blaupunkt cassette AM/FM and graphic equalizer/amp.
Does anyone know if there is a way / how to do it - solder in some type of input jack so I can simply plug my Ipod into the thing? I'd like to retain the stock components and just use the system to listen to my Ipod when not listening to the whine of the turbo.

There was an article in last month's (?) issue of Roundel on how to do it with a BMW radio with a cassette player. Drawback was that the cassette wouldn't work and longer and you had to run a blank cassette in there while using it. In that case you'd be better off just getting one of those cassettes with the 1/4" jack and sticking that in the player like we used to do with Discmen in the 1990's. (gawd, I feel old).

You might want to check with www.crutchfield.com. They carry a lot of vehicle/radio specific adaptors, and it seems like the inventory is continuously growing.

However, as a worst case scenario, I've bought some adaptors which feed into the antenna line, and are 12V powered, so they provide a nice strong signal to the radio. Only provides for the audio input; you would need a separate connection to keep the iPod charged. I can't seem to find it online right now, but am using them in our Ford Focus'.

Why not just put a new aftermarket head unit in. I got an Alpine from crutchfield that came with an iPod cable for my DD.

Yes, I have the Alpine unit in my 911. I wanted to keep the stock look in my 930.
The new Alpine looks too blingy and the plastic face is too reflective to easily read when it is sunny out. When I am wearing polarized sun glasses, the display is also made invisible depending upon my head tilt angle.

If I could get a new Alpine with the older, less Sony like look, but with the Ipod features (Ipod mgmt and lists, etc.) I'd be tempted.

I understand. Todays head units can look very out of place in an older car.

I have the RF converter that plugs into the antenna socket and it worked really well.
This is probably the best solution for keeping it old school.

It was in the cab and now on the shelf.
The Targa has a newer head unit so I can get a plug from crutchfield.
Anyway, I don't need it so it's yours for a 6 pack if you feel like driving over here!:)

If your original stereo has CD-changer controls, there may be an ipod cable that can attach to the stereo in place of the CD changer. Crutchfield is a good place to start looking.

If your stuck on keeping the original stereo, I'd go with the cassette adapter that Steve mentioned. They're cheap, easy to use, and don't require any modification or work to install.

There's always FM modulators, but the sound quality is crap on those. Although, if your entire stereo system is original 20 yo stuff, it may not even be noticeable.

Personally, I'd go for a new Blaupunkt unit. They make some models that have matte black faces and fit well with the interiors on older cars. Also, blaupunkt branded radios use the same connectors in the back as their OEM models, so it may be plug-n-play with no adapters or wiring work required.
