Help! Blow out in Dayton, OH

I haven't been lurking here awhile as I've been on the road enjoying the back roads of Wisconsin. :D

But tonight I pushed it a bit too hard I guess and I had a blow out near Dayton, Ohio just after 10 PM. I had just got my spare out when a friendly trooper came by to offer more light thankfully.

I don't really know what I had on the right front which blew, but I it looks like the side wall melted right off. No idea how I did that :lol:

I just got to a room for the night, limping on the doughnut and 'll start looking for a replacement in the morning. Does anyone have any suggestions for stores or tires on a 2003 boxster (17in)? I have michelin 255/40ZR17 on the back but I'll confirm that in the morning.

Since you have internet access, check www.tirerack.com You should be able to determine OEM sizes/brands. 205-50-17 perhaps was stock front size? Michelin, Pirelli and Continental, perhaps even Bridgestone have been used by Porsche as original equipment brands.

As suggested, go to Tire Rack and look at the top rated tires in their survey -- get Max Perf Summer tires if you only use your car on the warmer, drier Winter days. Tire Rack has installers all over the country, so you could get tires overnight'd to Ohio and installed the next day.

If you limp back to the DC area, then just go to Radial Tire in Silver Spring. Just be sure to get there 30 minutes before they open and line up in the alley! Ask for Paul and he'll be able to recommend tires for your car and intended use.

or...take the wheels/tires off the car, bring them to Radial Tire in ANOTHER car, and you won't have to wait in line. Better option if you're close: drop off and pick up the next day! Best option: have your wife do it!! :D

Think in pairs, as in tire(s). Sounds like you ran it at high speed without air. Isn't owning an exotic car great. Ju$t think about the fun you are having.

Don't get Toyo T1r's. They suck.

Thanks all for the ideas. I have several leads on 205/50-17 models from the local phone book and online. I recall I just got the michelin 255/40-17's for the rear from tirevan. Wished they were out here...

I'll post again later on with an update.

What's your problem with the Toyo T1r?? I have them on my street 911, have run them on the track when I could not be bothered changing to R888. I have not seen a problem so far.

I have them on my 996 as they replaced Yokohama's. In my opinion they have a lot more sidewall roll over and the car doesn't feel as sharp as with the Yoko's. The Yoko's didn't have the greatest stick but the car was a lot more responsive. I wish I had spent the xtra money on PS2's or Bridgestone's.

Discount tires was a local store that had the michelin pilot all sports (all seasons?) 205/55-17s in stock. So now I have stock tires all around again. Cost me a few hours, but they gave me a 1/2 off credit too since my cuurent front tires weren't really worn at all.

Oldtree is probably right. I was bookin trying to make time and I hadn't check my pressure. I'll post the pic I took in a bit, but from the looks of it, the side wall just melted right down. I responded quickly and pulled over in a flat stretch to change. I saved the rim but it was smokin.

I finished my trek without further incident. Stilll very happy with my trip, but wi$er for the lesson.
