CIS to EFI, a good idea?
 

Just a question for all of you, I have a CIS motor (it's a Mercedes, but still uses a Bosch CIS setup), that needs a rebuild. I was thinking about converting from CIS to EFI setup....if there was a benefit to doing so.

Has anyone had experience with this, and if so, were there benefits to HP, drive-ability, and/or mpg?

Also, any suggestions on setups that work? I figure I'll have to get a TB and rig up a fuel-rail system.

PS: If anyone wants to come over and brainstorm ideas while looking at the motor I would be very willing to have you visit.

Let me know what you find out. I've thought about doing the same thing to my CIS 450SL. Seems like the biggest obstacle is getting the custom fuel rail and injector bungs that would fit the existing holes. You could probably use the existing throttle body - maybe rig it up with a TPS.

I was thinking SDS, since it's easy and you don't have to know how to make your own mother-board etc (like megasquirt).

I guess no-one here has converted a 2.7 or 3.0 CIS car to EFI?

I'd for sure have to get a throttlebody setup, as mine is very different from what I've seen on other cars. I guess mine is a D-Jet CIS system?

i thought you just had to have a throttle position sensor not a whole throttle body. on the 914 boards, someone used a nissan position sensor or some such marque from a junk yard.

I've thought about this every time I have have a CIS issue. In theory it sounds great, but the more I read about it, it sounds like a PITA. While I'm not a fan of CIS troubleshooting, I dont think I would like setting up a fuel curve or ignition advance curve with the laptop either. If you can get a map setup for your car it should be a lot easier. Otherwise, I've read some horror stories.

I thought Noah did a CIS to EFI on his 911 and then realized he should just go to carbs due to constant EFI challenges/issues.
