Big PS pump problem
 

I was trying to move the 993 around in the garage without starting it, as I have a car and motorcycle parked behind it in the driveway and am taking her down this week for dist. rebuild, caps, rotors and plug wires. Anyway, I had the key slightly turned to keep the wheel unlocked and did a lot of pushing back and forth while turning the wheel hard each way. Got done and saw lots of red ps fluid drops under the right rear. They are fresh and weren't there 30 min. ago and I haven't started the car in 6 wks. What happened? What do I do next?

I guess the first step is for you get someone else to turn the wheel while you checks reservoir, hoses, etc. for leaks. Hopefully it's something simple like that, and not a problem with the pump or rack.

My guess is you back filled the PS reservoir to overflow. It's on the right rear as is the pump isn't it? Can't remember where it is on 964 :? Without the engine running to circulate you were able to push it back from the rack.

Panic! (please post pix of this) Then clean up the spill from inside and out of the car as best you can and start the car. Move the wheel back and forth some, look for fresh spills if none then check the PS fluid per the book. If yes look for where it is coming from. Fresh leak or old stuff still dripping out of the corners? My guess is DR is spot on.

I'm new to the world of Porsche, but a lot of cars will back fill the reservoir if the steeering wheel is turned without the engine running. Clean the area, start the car and look for new leaks.

My truck did the same thing. Turned the wheel with key on and instant puddle. I would guess thats what happened.

Ok, I guess it'll be ok. Now I am well into swapping plug wires, which is one of the worst 993 DIY's around, even with the engine out. I am waaayyyy past the point of no return now and will post photos a little later on a separate thread.

More. What a nightmare. But I saved about $2k by DIY'ing this. More money for ammo.
