Shot 'n' Bomb DE recap
This was a great couple of days of driving for me. My first session out (first time on SP main in 10 months) I was amazed at how much of the track I remembered. Under great instruction from Betty C, I learned a lot of the finer points of the line (and some not so fine points) and also gained confidence in my braking ability so I could brake later and enter turns faster. The "entering turns faster" bit was a little ill-concieved in Turn 5 though. I kept going in too hot and over steering around it. It was a little disconcerting to hear Betty laughing in the intercom every time I drifted through there. I guess it speaks to her confidence in my car control skills that she was having a grand ole time while I'm just trying to keep the car from going sideways.
Betty signed me off for the afternoon sessions, and once I was free from the extra dead weight in the car, I was having fun picking on the higher HP cars. I think I might have reeled in a 996 turbo at one point, but there was a similar-colored 911 out there that wasn't turbocharged. It seems more likely that I caught him, than the turbo. I did pass an S2000 a few times - he just couldn't quite get away from me in the straights. :D The green/yellow/blue group was pretty tight too. We'd all get together after each session and compare notes and talk trash. Terry's (Terry #44) daughter Emily was in that group. She's a pretty good driver - a lot of the boys had to swallow their pride and admit they were being out-driven by a teenage girl. I'll try not to make this a TD-lengthed post, so I'll wrap it up -- great time, great weather, and no equipment failure! (That is, aside from me completely toasting my brakes and having to nurse the car home with metal on metal sounds every time I slowed down. :() |
nice recap but, this post is worthless w/o pics of.......ahem.... 'the drivers'.....
|
I didn't bring a camera to the track. But I'm now researching in-car video solutions. Which of course needs a roll bar to be mounted on. And with a roll bar I should really get some track seats. And once I have track seats I might as well get 5-point harnesses. :D

Was your weapon of choice the BMW with the new final drive? While waiting another 10 months for the camera upgrade tell us about how that worked out?
You only need pics of one of the drivers – you had }{ at “teenaged girl” ;) |
pretty girl? white 944?... sorry, haven't noticed. have no idea what you're talking about.

Yep, that was it. I'm not sure if the limited-slip aspect had much life left in it, but I do know I was getting on the throttle only a split second after turn-in at every corner. But that could also be because I don't have much power and don't have to worry about throttle-induced oversteer. The gearing helped in some places, hurt in others. I wanted to be in 2nd for T1, but I would have run out or revs by T2, so I just kept put it in third and kept it there until out of T2. I did use 2nd for T5. I could REALLY charge up that hill with all that torque available, but it meant I had to upshift in the middle of T6. I'm not entirely sure at this point, but I think the short diff helped more than it hurt. Quote:

Thanks for the great ride David. I really was enjoying the sideways trips in turn 5 because your car control WAS good enough that I didn't think we were going to hit the dirt at any time. And yes you did pass a turbo on Monday ( a dark blue one). He didn't come back on Tuesday. Glad you got home okay. We were watching for you on the side of the road on the way home. ;)
Emily will definitely humble more drivers in the future. I had the opportunity to ride with her on day 2 and you guys better look out, although she's so cute I doubt many of you will mind being passed by her. Great event although a little cooler weather would have been good for me and my car as I now have to replace the oil cooler. Seems like a good opportunity to put in the fuel cell that's been on my list for the last twelve months. |
150+ laps. That pretty much sums up an event with Schattenbaum. I was beat.
A little on the warm side, but it was worth it. I had a great time running in white/black, and then the last session of each day they threw red into the mix. Great fun. The 3.2 with 115,000 continues to amaze me. It survived another event, although I may be hearing some new sounds. I'm not gentle on it, and it still pulls strong. I hope to make it last until the end of the year and then get a few more ponies under the decklid. Messing with a 500hp turbo for the last two sessions on Tuesday really makes me want a little more power. A really nice guy (Mike) was the driver. I think this was his 4th event, and he handled the car pretty well. Watching him disappear on the front stretch was humbling. I'll have to post some video. I think there may have only been 3-4 cars on the track the last session on Tuesday (you better believe I was one of them). |
that's hardcore josh. glad to hear you took full advantage of the tracktime
as for the turbos, don't sweat it, you'll get them back on shenandoah  unfortunately summit's configuration is such that w/ two back-to-back straightaways connected by a fast corner, there just aren't enough cornering zones to slow them down before they get away too far ;) |
Yeah }{ - The last session was tons of fun.....not too fun for the snake I ran over under the bridge (I'll see if I can find some video of that). The turbo followed me the whole last session....he could have passed me anytime he wanted on the front straight. From turn 1 to 10, I could get about 20-30 car lengths on him, then watching his closing rate on the front straight was astonishing to say the least. I just couldn't believe it. He waived off the pass twice, and later said he was trying to learn the fun parts of the track by following me, which said alot about his maturity.
