'71 914-6 Restoration

Hi Everyone,

New here, but thought I would post a couple pictures of my 914-6 restoration. I bought my car in February of '10 and decided it needed a full restoration. I was looking to make it a hair less than a concours car, I wanted to be able to drive it around town and enjoy it. Not a trailer queen. However, from day 1, I always wanted the chassis to be restored to factory specs so the car had a perfect "foundation" to build upon. I wanted to find a turn-key shop to handle the project.

I am a regular over on 914World.com and several members recommended a shop in Charles City, VA.

That shop began great, disassembling the car and stripping it to bare metal. The whole project was estimated to be 18-24 months and he appeared to be on track at the pace he was going.

Not really sure what happened, owner said he injured his back and was unable to work and in a lot of pain for quite some time.

Regardless, after 61 months of broken promises and excuses, I picked my car up, in pieces, and took it to a shop in Torrance, CA.

I am posting those comments, barely a scratch on the surface, to hopefully save another collector car owner/member from the same. We all work hard to support our hobby and when someone fails to deliver as promised it is not fun.

The CA shop has over 300 hours in to correct almost all of the work done in VA, to restore my chassis to factory specs. After almost 11 months, the chassis is now perfect and ready for paint. Here is a link to my Thread on 914World.com if you want to see some pictures.

This is Part 1, my car arriving at the VA shop up through my picking it up 61 months later: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=188776

Here is Part 2, my car arriving at the CA shop and all of the VA work being corrected. Part2: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=313869

Here is my car before it left for the VA shop.

Sorry to hear about your experience with Scotty. He is a member here, but has not been very active the last couple years. He has turned out some stunning work, but definitely seems to have run into production issues the last couple years. It is one of the downfalls of a business that relies on a single person/ craftsman.

I have followed this over at 914 world, not sure why you are reposting it on a mid Atlantic(centric forum). other than the obvious reasons.

Thanks for that BlackTalon. Yeah, I can appreciate the issues of running a one-man shop. It was what drew me to ScottyB to begin with -absolute quality control.

Unfortunately, it seems whatever he once may have been able to do, he is no longer capable of . I will add photos to this thread showing the "work" he did to my car and believe me, everyone will be shocked.

Casey914 - I am posting it here as 914World tends to be just 914's. Scotty works on all old Porsches, so I would not be able to sleep if I did not alert others to be cautious if they choose to deal with ScottyB.

I was specifically referred to this forum by another member who was also done wrong by ScottyB. Since this appears to be Scotty's geographic area of reach for work, better to be educated than not. Cheers.

We are happy to have you here participating in Dorkiphus. But I sincerely hope you did not join just to post about Scotty. We are not a platform for people to seek out restitution, etc.

Most here know Scotty has not been taking on new work for the last 2-3 years.

Post more pictures of the car! The thread title led me to believe this was going to be a cool resto thread, not a "bitch about Scotty B" thread. Not to say your warnings are unjustified (I know people personally who have had difficulties with this shop as well), but this looks like such a cool project that I want to see more about the car.

I am not posting to seek out restitution. I am posting to share my experience on the road to restoration for my 914-6 both bad and good. I will post pictures as time permits to demonstrate what happened to my car and to show the incredible talents of Kent Simmons, Auto Art Customs, in Torrance, CA as he brought it back from the dead.
