Front Struts Replacement

Anyone have the order of events for a proper change of front struts? Now that the car is in the air :) want to get started on the list of updates and the Koni red adjustables are coming off and the yellow adjustables are going in! I think that there is an easy way to do this without taking the whole front apart, right? Rears are a piece of cake. Will post pics if anyone is interested.

Brake line (use an extra bleeder cap to seal), or caliper and tie off, tie rod, ball joint, top strut mount. Since you have some time and if you want more excitement do in reverse order :P

Scribe the top mount, don’t move the tie rod end = no need to realign

I have to seperate the ball joint? That is what i wanted to avoid if at all possible. Oh well, whats another $150 right?

No you don’t :!: Just remove the tapered pin that holds the joint to the strut. It’s about 3 inches above the top of the joint and costs about $12. You need to use a drift to drive it out or cut the threaded end off flush. You don’t even want to “mushroom the end :!: They can’t be reused but simpler than the joint. Anyway, you would have to just remove the nut on the bottom of the joint not separate the joint. New nut and star washer about $12

Sweet! My search yielded no pics or description of this process (too easy to note?) so I will take pics as i go along. Thanks Dave!

Will the inspectors at Soap Box Derby allow you to run yellow adjustable Koni's?

They will as long as he does all the work himself :P
Rumor has it when he R&Rs his peddle cluster he’s going to install a different type of peddle to use for motivation

Bill you might have enough room with your flared fenders to swap the struts with out removing the ball joint pin.

I have done it by undoing the brake line as discribed by David, unhooking the sway bar, and then pushed the shock piston down with a long screwdriver until I could grab the cover and pull the shock cover off exposing the large nut that holds the strut in. To remove the nut use the koni tool if you have it, if not BF channel locks can handle the job.

Pull the old strut out and give it to me.
