Shifter

Given that you could do it again, what shifter solution would you use on a 79SC that has enough slop to feed half the pigs in Poland? Well, maybe it is not that bad, Rhode Island maybe! :P Pari, what is that shifter solution you are using that looks like a bridge support? Note: Charile bushings on order. :?

First I would change the bushings. Sounds like you have this covered. I would also change the ball cup and shift rod support bushing. While the shifter is out of the car, tear it apart and fix the slop. Blueprinting, followed by proper adjustment will yield phenomenal results. Go here for the shifter blueprinting.

If this doesn't help, the WEVO or Rennshift products are supposed to be great. I was planning to get an aftermarket shifter but then fixed mine. Night and day difference.

My shifter is a factory SS with the Seine Systems gate shift kit and bronze shifter bushings. Night and day difference between that and the original shifter. Now, some beleive that the factory SS is too short and will destory the transmission - I think if you're careful and don't speed shift like its a $1000 Honda you'll be fine. However, if this is a concern, try to find someone with an 85/86 that has installed a factory SS and try to get their OEM shifter - 85/86 years were 20% shorter than previous years. Some prominent members of the SCWDP have realized the value of installing these superior Carrera parts in their cars. (For reference, the factory SS is 40% shorter.)

New ball cup, shift rod and coupler bushings (esp bronze ones) will do most of the "slop" elimination. SS makes the slop seem like less because of the shorter moment arm. And if you get used to driving a car with some sort of gate shift kit (Seine Systems, Wevo, etc), you'll never want to drive one without.

John, I have the Seine Systems gate shift kit that Chris described above. Personally I think it is a good alternative for the $$, and a notable difference can be felt when installing the gate shift kit and replacing the shift coupler bushings, and ball cup bushing all at the same time. For the budget minded, this is the way to go.
But for those people who's wallets are crying out the sky's the limit, there are some other more pricey options. For example there is the Wevo gate shift kit, or the Stomski shift coupler, both of which will change the feel of the shifting of the 915.
Chris pretty much summed it up above.

I know a lot of people like the Siene systems solution. THis basically replicates the approach used by the more expensive version that has been around for many years.

If you are really looking at options, its well worth looking at something that came out more recently that replaces the entire shifter. Its based on the stock shifter, but adds a raft of improvements. Take a look at http://www.rennshift.com/mainpage_temp.htm

The Wevo solution is the top of the line. Shifter + revised delector mechanism in the trans. Nice, but well north of ten benjamins.

I lived all over R.I. growing up. Never saw a single pig. No Yankmees fans either.

Forgot to answer the question. What Jamie said.

I knew this group of experts would have some fancy answers. Thank you. I'm scratching my head now. Will decide in a few days which way to go and maybe see whats at the Chesapeake Parts Exchange on the 5th.

New tools arrived today. (1) Steelman IngineEar advanced electronic listening tool (for the Professional) or so it says on the box. Cost $105.50. Intend to use it to search out CIS vac leaks. (2) Mastercool Infared Thermometer (world class quality) $ 61.25. To measure rotor temps and tread temps at the track and hot spots in the engine compartment and to show off to my neighbors what a complete took kit I have. Then I will introduce them to Kurt and David to show how poor our little neighborhood is.

PS. The reason to pick on RI is because it is so small it can't get even.

John, I’m impressed w/your new tools, & don’t care one way or the other about RI & it’s alleged lack of pigs :!:

I have the factory SS & thinks it’s great. Didn’t know about the epoxy so out comes the spot welder & emery paper. Wish I’d ordered the B-coupler

Oh yea, if there are any Navy Officers that lost hats while in OCS in January ’70 Let me know, I got quit a collection from the local watering holes while attending Automatic Combustion Control school. No excuses, I had just gotten back from a long West Pack deployment & just didn’t want to be in RI. Young, dumb & full of....

Any idea how much this shifter will be? Doesn't look like it has come out yet. At this point, the Siene Systems + Factory SS = $300. If this shifter is in that range (say around $400), to me that would be a better solution.

The Wevo shifter, for those taking notes, is really nice, but $600 . I'd love to know where the Rennshifter falls in this price spectrum.
