Audio advice wanted.
 

Putting the interior back together, and I want to install new speakers in my door panels before putting them on. Any suggestions as to what to get? I was thinking about a 5.25" component system for the doors, or maybe even a 6.5" system is they would fit It may be a while until I have a mounting location for other speakers, so I want something that produce some respectable full-range sound.

Budget is around $150. Yes, I know you can spend tons of $$$$ of these, but the fact that (a) My hearing is not the greatest after 10 years of standing in front of very loud guitar amps and (b) Its going in a loud 911 mean I probably don't need a set of studio quality monitors.

BTW, I have to buy all new speakers for the car, as this is what the old ones looked like:

You can easily install 6.5" coaxials in the doors. Many are available in your budget. Keep in mind though... having a good signal (head unit) with decent wattage (high power headunit or preferably an amp) will make a big difference in full range sound reproduction.

You should take a listen to what we did in Dave's (BlackTalon) car.

Chris, if you want to take a look/try, My 6.5" speakers are in a box. You can barrow them for a few days to see how you like the fit, which is just bolt in. I think I may have had to trim the hole in the door panel slightly, but nothing to the metal on the door.

Vu is right about the amps.
My head unit is fine but not enough power. To me it sounds tinny. I'm fixing that with 2 amps I picked up at the pawn shop in germantown.
I haven't heard it yet, but it should be a huge improvement.

I'm considering VU's type of woofer in the console.
Anyway, stop by when you can.

Amplifier and speakers add weight -- remove the entire sound system and your brakes will work better. :)

I keep getting tempted to gut my sound system. Then again seeing and listening to Charlie's awesome system makes me actually want to add weight to my SC. :roll:

I don't see the problem here, why get all wrapped around the axle about stereo/no stereo. The is a simple solution. Buy another Porsche! That way the track car can have the primal auditory delights (flat six engine, or okay, maybe one of those other engines) and your Porsche that is primarily street driven can have the audiophile set up. The added weight can even bee a bonus, a credible reason for justifying more power. :twisted:

You are right on about this. My whole suspension redo-interior restoration has made me come to terms that there are good street cars and good track cars, but trying to make a car that does both well is difficult at best. A good street suspension will be too soft on the track and a good track suspension will be too harsh on the street. So I decided to make my Carrera a street car. Current thinking is to get some DE experience, and in a few years start looking for a no-sunroof SC coupe of something like that to turn into a gutted, no interior, no stereo track beast. Maybe I'll get a 944 - they're cheap and according to Dave, a lot of fun to work on :wink: .

These are $300 retail but you can buy them all day long on eBay for about $130. Since I've blown so much money on my car this year, the stereo system will have to be upgarded in pieces - door speakers first, then an amp, then a new head unit.

Hey Vu - since you know your stuff audio wise, please let me know if these speakers are OK or if they are crap. All I have to go on are online reviews :roll: .

My solution for the Targa was some 5.25" Polk Audios for the doors and a sound box with two 6x9 Polk audio 3-ways in it. Could even add an amp to the box. Box lays across folded down rear seats. No provision in my targa for speakers in the rear shelf. At a DE or HPDC, the box speaker wires unplug and the weight comes out. 8)
