I located my oil leak !!!
I had the car at Intersport yesterday for my pre-VIR tech. I had them power wash the engine while there. Drove the car home and - voila! - there's a drip just like always, only now I can see where it's coming from: around the lower nuts on the oil cooler where it mounts to the case. So, I call Intersport and they say $$$$ to do the job, which requires dropping the engine. Ouch :(
But, I think maybe, just maybe, I have a '73 engine shroud, which allows one to remove the cooler without dropping the engine. Recall, my engine was rebuilt circa 1975. Anyone done this? I really, really hate the idea of spending nearly a grand to replace a couple $2 seals :x |
 Bring it on over . . . . or better yet just have us over we'll figure it out for less than $$$$.$$
I thought that the block cooler could be removed without dropping the engine . . . but I don't know anything about 2.8s  Just sound the horn (other than this weekend). |
Greg,
The oil cooler comes out w/ ease if you have double-joined elbows and wrists. If you have the newer shroud then removing the oil lines and 4 nuts (2 on the bottom and two on top) the cooler should pull out into the rear RR fender. While taking mine off, I was thinking what a b*** it would be to take out with the engine in the car, but others have done it and there are plenty of posts re: this. The hardest part is getting to the top 2 nuts, may be easier to get to them if you lower the engine by removing the two tranny bolts. Also, since you have carbs, you could remove the carbs and shroud pretty easily while the engine is in the car, can't you? I'll be up for helping, no problem. |

Makes you wonder why Intersport wanted a grand to do the job. :?:

From what I remember Greg, your engine was pretty dang clean before. Must be sparkling now! Congrats on finding the leak and do I smell a project for the group on either 4/12 or 4/13?

PCA Potomac's HPDC is that weekend, Doug E. I'm in for an engine drop the weekend after. Just say the word.

Greg,
If an engine drop is the way you want to go, I have Marc's lift, tranny jack and pallet at my house. Let me know. |

Was the power washer you mentioned a steam washer or a pressure washer? I'm concerned about destroying something with too much pressure. Anyone have any advice or cautions? Keith |
