Lucas Caliper rebuild kit?
 

My parts are starting to trickel in for my front end rebuild project. In one of my boxes I recieved 2 Lucas (French company) brake caliper rebuild kits. When I opened a box, I had enough seals/boots/clips to rebuild 2 calipers. I bought the Lucas kit as they were a little more expensive thinking they were of better quality, but it looks like I paid for quantity...hmmm.

Anyone have any experience with the Lucas brand caliper kits. Are they poopoo, or should I be allright?

Charlie - I have no experience with Lucas but when I bought my kits from Dulles International Motors (can't remember mfg now) there was only enough parts for one caliper rebuild per box.

FWIW a few people have told me there are definate differences in rubber quality between kits but the only specifics they could provide were to avoid any kits from Mexico.

Doug, thanks for the mexican tip. They probably use the H20 somewhere in the process :roll:

Upon further research, Lucas builds OEM breaks for Audi, so their components cant be all that bad. I'm still looking for a definitive answer from the pelican board.

speaking of calipers... I have the M calipers all around. Are they all the same or do the fronts have different size pistons from the rears?

The Lucas kits have been holding up well so far. They still keep the fluid in the calipers and off the floor. Which reminds me, I wonder what I did with the other set, hmmmm.

So whats the verdict? Rebuild them or buy rebuilt calipers? Personally I would rather rebuild them myself, simply because of my bad experiences with rebuilt parts (especially the ones with silver spray paint). However, if the job proves to be a huge pain in the a$$, it might be worth my time to buy some that are already done. Any suggestions?
Do all the parts that are needed to rebuild the calipers come in the lucas kit?

It's pretty simple to do. The hardest part is getting the pistons out, you need compressed air for that. I dont quite get the orientation of the pistons, that might be another gotcha. I wonder if the rebuilts are setup correctly?

If you're not in a very big hurry, why not go through AutoZone? They are rebuilt, cheap, and others were satisfied w/ the entire transaction.

That way gives you minimum downtime on your car. It's much easier to just replace parts. Then at your own pace, rebuild your calipers and sell 'em to the next guy. It will cover *most* of the price you paid at AutoZone.

They say you have to order them, so give yourself a week for the calipers to arrive- still plenty of time before MO.
