Good shop/mechanic in MD needed for 914 work

Anyone know of a good mechanic or shop in MD that knows 914s inside-out? I have a 1970 914 that has a bunch of nagging problems that are beyond me (bad wheel berring, electrical short, broken window crank, broken speedometer). All this and only 29K on the thing!

I have gone to a good shop in Gaitherburg in the past, but I am looking for something closer, esp since I have a bad wheel berring. I imagine the short issue could be taken care of by a good auto-electric shop.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Thanks

Ray at ASG in Fairfax is a 914 specialist.

My suggestion is doing the speedometer and window crank yourself. Since I see an electrical problem, I'd take it to Matt De Maria as I've read he's a go-to guy for that sort of stuff. He could do the bearing too.

What's wrong with the speedo? Could be the speedo or could be the cable. Disconnect the cable at the angle drive at the rear of the tail of the transmission and spin it with a drill (low speed) and see if the needle registers. If not, spin it the other way (low speed) and observe the needle. If the needle works and the odo doesn't, there is a plastic gear inside that is likely broken. Take out the speedo (unscrew speedo drive cable from underneath the dash, it's a real PIA!!! then unscrew and tilt the instrument cluster forward and remove wiring to gauge MAKE SURE YOU OBSERVE CONNECTIONS FOR PROPER RE-INSTALL, then gauge is a slip fit removal from cluster frame) and send it to North Hollywood Speedometer or Palo Alto Speedo for about a $120 fix. There is a Bosch instrument shop in Winchester, VA, but I don't know if you can get them to do it.

Broken handle is simply to lift the cover over the screw to allow unscrewing handle.

X2 Matt DeMaria. Near metro. He will drop you off and pick you up in his 996. :)

Hmmmm, a guy that does electrical work on 914s....I'll have to keep that in mind!

x3 on Matt. I'm pretty sure there's no one within twice the distance of Hyattsville who knows half as much about 914s as Matt. Was he the "good shop in Gaithersburg" to which you were referring ("Stuttgart Performance Engineering")?

X whatever on Matt, call him and make an appointment

Thanks.

Speedo: It's in the head, I'm sure. Had it break one other time and had it sent to the place in CA. I think it's a different part this time in there as the manual trip ODO no longer turns.

The internal mechanism of the window crank is busted - there are some flimsy plastic parts in there that wear out - need someone who can weld some metal replacements, or otherwise replace.

I will! Thanks to all.

You might try some 914 parts recyclers for a used window regulator. Are you familiar with 914world.com? If not, go there and, among others, look for "adidias". His real name is Billy Whitesides and he distributes parts out of NC. I mention him because he's close, I have no interest or affiliation with him. There are others. Replacement speedo can be had for $25 (+ or -) too, they come up all the time on ebay.
