PSA: I found a new way to mask tires for painting wheels.

There is a clear plastic product that comes in rolls that is used to protect carpets when painting. 24" x 50' per roll. It sticks to anything but pulls off clean. It's about as sticky as masking tape. I was able to mask off my tires in literally 2 minutes. No tape, no paper. Just pull the sheet over the tire, press it down, and use a razor to trim out the part to be painted.

So, for any fellow rattle-can Picasso's, pass the word.

I rattlecanned my phones with the tires still on! I save a ton of time skipping the tire black when I wash it. :)

You didn't say where to buy that stuff.

does this product work on non-944's?

VaSteve 10-19-2008 10:19 PM

They have an RS version. It costs 2x as much.

Yes, you just put it on backward. Of course, the urge to paint your wheels is generally associated with 944s since only we have the dreaded phone dials.

PS: I bought it at a Sherwin Williams store near my house, but it's possible that it would be available at Home Depot.

PPS: It is with great trepidation that I post below an actual photo of the end product. It's a little scary, but I'll reserve judgment until I get them mounted on the car. The good news is, I can repaint them in an hour!!!

Yes, it's edgy, but when your vision clears, consider this theme:

It is.

Greg,

It's funny, but when I saw the first photo and before I scrolled down, the second photo is EXACTLY what I was thinking. ;)

Monterey Historic races inspired me.

Phone dials won't fit that car without adapters ;) BTW thanks for the tip!

Finally got around to pics with the wheels on. Comments welcomed, but not necessarily heeded.
Remember, we're talking 15" phone dials here. For something to be a travesty, it has to start out promising.
