Anyone ever get an emissions waiver from DMV?

The 993 has gotten the check engine (cash emptying) light. Luckily, it's not the dreaded SAI ports, but rather lean conditions in both banks, due to a myriad of little stuff, most likely O2 sensors (993's have four of them). One of them is certainly bad. Anyway, Taylor at ASG has been doing a lot of diagnostics on her for me and I expect a phat bill tomorrow. I'll do the repairs myself, but the parts won't be cheap. I could be looking at refurb'ing my injectors too. I know there's a dollar limit on what you have to spend trying fix an emissions issue before you get an emissions waiver and I have no doubt I'll exceed it easily. But can the bills be from multiple sources or do they need to be from one place? Pretty sure I'll have a bill from ASG, one from Jerry, maybe an alternator rebuild (due to low volt. output) and maybe one from a shop that refurbs injectors. Car will easily pass any sniff test, but I can't fool the OBD computer.

Why is your highly maintained car going to fail and need all that other work? Just the 02 sensor? I don't get it.

IMA can clean the injectors. Mine were filthy. $120 is all it took. :)

It will fail with a CEL or if I clear the CEL without repairing the source of the problem. I can clear the CEL all day long, but that doesn't fool the inspection station's computer.

Don't the bills have to be incurred after the documented failure?

I guess it's all moot now, since I just found out that the repairs have to be done at a one of the approved places, all of which are gas stations and quick lube-like places that I'd never bring any car to, much less the 993. Maybe I'll have to go see Sami at the Franconia Shell if I can't get this thing fixed by end of August.

Looks like I need to spend $680 to qualify for the waiver and it has to be at a DEQ-certified shop. I think I will order four new O2 sensors from Sami through his WorldPak account, which should put me close to $500. If he will give me a receipt for the parts on his station's letterhead or whatever, that would put a good dent in the $680, should I eventually need the waiver. I'll be down that way tomorrow and will pay him a visit. He has gotten me parts at cost before through his WorldPak account. I hope he still owns that place and still remembers me. It's been a few yrs.

Sami is still at Franconia Shell. However, if you haven't been there in a few years, Sami works at the one across from the Government Center. Shell bought out the Texaco that was next to the Govt. Center and the Crown station down the street. I don't think Sami is affiliated with those stations.

I haven't been down there in a while. Where is there another Shell station and where is the gov't. center on Franconia Rd.? I know of a DMV and a police station and there was a Citgo and Exxon on each side of Grovedale where it meets Franconia.

Rick, the police station is in the Government Center. Sami works at the Shell that is almost directly across of Franconia Road from the police station/Govt. Center. It's right at the corner of Franconia Road and Valley View Drive. There is another Shell station next door to the police station/Govt. Center - Sami is not at that one.

Ah yes, now I know which one. Say, ever take a 911 on those hills on Valley View? Man, you can really catch some air there. But I've seen cops hiding there too.
