^ I may just bring the Golf R and hope for snow. I'll be the only one in Red Run Group :-)

So true.

I was in the garage until 5AM last night, but my progress doesn't really show it.
I started by installing the clutch slave cylinder. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps2nyza0gi.jpg Then the shift mechanism and cables. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...psela9yk5n.jpg http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...pszk4yfz32.jpg http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps6anafedy.jpg Followed by the transmission mounts. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...psdugk8g5m.jpg Cross member. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps7ldhpie4.jpg And finally, the V-brace. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...psqq5e7k8q.jpg Then I installed the new SS brake lines in the front. (I had SS lines before. Just replacing them preventatively.) http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...psditytjne.jpg With that done, I moved on to rebuilding the drive axles. I don't have many photos of this as the process is extremely messy. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...psp7f1khmv.jpg http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...psl2yeb4rc.jpg http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps7i48mww7.jpg http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps11pvqm4k.jpg http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...psacejksol.jpg If you are not familiar with the axles, the inner CV joint is removable and replaceable. The outer one is not, so the whole axle needs to be replaced at that point. Last I checked, they're around $800. To avoid replacing them, I strip them down every season and repack them with fresh CV joint grease and also replace the CV joint boots. So far I've only ever had to replace one inner joint when the grease dried out over the course of two seasons. Ever since I started doing them every season, they have been ok. |
Where did you get the SS clutch line? Also, what grease for the axles? I need to do that.
|
The long SS line in the photo is the clutch bleeder valve extension from Rebel Rock Motorsports. I got tired of the PITA process that was the previous clutch bleeding procedure. The clutch slave cylinder still has the original rubber line. Can't find a SS line anywhere for that. If there is one, please let me know.
I would only use Redline CV-2 grease in the axles. Link here. Everything else I tried, including Swepco, is garbage. Well, at least garbage for our use case. |
Today I installed the newly rebuilt drive axles and various miscellaneous items.
Axles and sway bar in place. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps9dm2y5pa.jpg Exhaust. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...psrpzgh5zn.jpg I also wrapped the downpipes and replaced the rear SS brake lines. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...pslh5xmq1x.jpg Threw on the bumper carrier as well to make more space in the garage. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...psp7zv1o5d.jpg |
Nice work. :)

I did not do a whole lot of work tonight, but last night I installed the brake pads and rear bumper. Looks more like a car again.
Pads with titanium shims. It was a tight fit. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...psgj5czrlm.jpg Bumper. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps7afngivl.jpg I'm currently working on some fluid changes. The hope is to spend some time this weekend aligning the car. Then it's off to VIR for the Zone 2 DE. |
I worked on some odds and ends tonight and got the car ready to for alignment tomorrow. Time to whip out the old SmartStrings.
I made a little air scoop for my power steering fluid cooler. I integrated it into the center underbody shield. For a stock look, I used a Porsche transmission air scoop. Here's what it looks like when riveted in place. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...psnemhgvwx.jpg http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...pstcpyssjj.jpg http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...pso98umgrj.jpg I added the zip ties for extra security. My 1.0 version of this occasionally popped out on the sides, but the rivet always held well. Version 2.0 should be better. The Cayman is unamused by the BS weather. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps2ocydjar.jpg |
