Steve Weiner helped me with my setup many years ago too and I am on 500/700 springs with moton double adjustables, rs adjustable sways, and monoballs all round. The car sees primarily track time, but I still like driving it on the street too from time to time. I'm far from a successful club racer, but am really happy with the setup and the compliance on the different tracks we run in VA/MD/NY area. I haven't yet gotten it back on the track since moving to FL last summer, so will see how it does with the rough Sebring track this fall. There is a lot of adjustability with pressures and sways, and the car is not my limiting factor. Everyone here is fast and have worked to create a setup that they like with their 964s, so any of these is a good starting point for you.
MCS (Motion Control...) is where the guys who originally created Moton ended up going a few years ago when Moton was sold. This is what Steve W recommends now. I think any of the recommendations will be a good starting point, but in the end there is a personal preference piece of the puzzle and the only way to figure out what works best for you is to pick a starting point and move forward from there. Good luck and let us all know where you start and end up. -Skip |
Skip during my ride along I was impressed with how compliant your car was at SP. It was a lot different then mine. I have since rebuilt my JRZs and am waiting so see how they feel at SP. Thankfully I will now this weekend!
I must add the drover had a lot to do with how well your car handled......kudos sir. |
Did I mention I'm jealous that Rick bought the suspension I've been wanting for the past 3 years...

Ken - how did it go?

Rick- sorry for the hi-jack.
Skip- thanks for asking. First the weather really could not have been any better especially with the threat of rain in the forecast. As it turned out overcast all Saturday but comfortable. Precip. came at 5:30 in sleet form after track was cold followed by rain over night. Sunday clear sun high in low 60s. The car felt much better! It was more a lot more compliant. Stiff in the right spots but not afraid to clip a turtle like before. I have not been through all the video yet but I know I ran a whole bunch of 28s including 28.15 but with combined White/Black and a severe lack of good points it was hard to really bare down for a clean lap. In one case (yes on video) I followed a car for a lap and a half without a pass--if I was any closer to him I could have steered his car. It was only after 2-3 of his mistakes that he let me by. There were a minimum of 3-4 really stubborn people that created trains and really made for potential dangerous situations. With that said the worst of it really was an issue I had after catching a 944 who was following a 914 between 9 and 10. The 914 gave a pass to the 944 and then a Cayman caught me as I was waiting my turn to pass the 914 and approaching 10 I got the pass from the 914, I started to step out and the Cayman behind me took the pass from the 914! This all happened between 9 and 10. If I had not been watching him I would have punted him into the paddock. That was the first time in 12 years I followed a driver to the paddock after a run to discuss the matter. Both of us were gentlemen and he apologized and admitted to some red mist. Oddly I think this had happened more than once as Schattenbaum called the White/Black drivers in not long after that to review a few things including one point does not equal 2-3 cars passing and where we could pass on track. One interesting happening was being 2(?) cars back from a Honda who threw a rod in the braking zone for 1 which made for a one hell of a ride for me!!!! I believe all the cars made it through unscathed with the exception of the Honda of course. Sorry back to the setup and car. I do think it is in a proper place with the JRZs being rebuilt and the spring rate. I now need to simply learn the art of make small adjustments in compression and rebound settings based on the track being visited. I did work on get off the brake sooner to carry more speed through corners. I also am getting comfortable learning the feeling of the weight transfer based on this set up and adjusting timing and location of corner entries. I cannot wait to get out there again! |
Ken - sounds like a couple of 'code brown' moments. Glad you made it out without issue. Also, great to hear the car is feeling much more compliant in setup. Enjoy and keep me posted.
I've pretty much given up on the track until the fall. The summer down here is the 'off-season' for obvious reasons and with two household moves in less than a year has me a little behind. Enjoy, -Skip |
