It is so hard to quantify how dissapointing it was not to participate. I was looking forward to that for weeks. :( Thanks for the loan of the CDI box, I'm going to be learning a lot about that item in the next couple of days. The car seems to run fine now, I hope that's all it is/was.

This beauty blew a radiator hose and spewed coolant. So two 911's were out of commission in the first lap of the slalom, and had to get towed.

The only track time I got was the trip to the skidpad. :(
I have no idea how you could work on that car, there is no room to get your hands in there!

"First of all WTF is a Golf doing on the track with a bunch of Porsche's, isn't it a Porsche Club event. "

That's a little harsh. HPDC is a driving skills clinic to allow drivers to understand the basics on how a car handles. The event is open to all marques. This allows your brother, sister, spouse, improve their driving skills. I'd almost bet money that everyone learned something.

"It was funny how people were driving so horrible, just gassing it the whole way through the turns, tires screeching and then into the gravel off track. One Audi A4 missed the apex so bad, they ended up in the pit area. I guess the TCS drive's for them, or at least that's what they think."

I dunno, maybe they didn't pay attention to their instructor? ;)

Steve, my CDI box went out at last fall's HPDC. I have a MSD unit now.

saturday was good too. we had a honda civic and an audi in the group. i guess i'm over the hill because it was very hard for me to overcome my natural instincts to slow down and i found it hard to learn the 7 turns of the road course, that is, learn a sequence of 7 things rather than 1 thing at a time. it was hard for me to floor it around a turn when i couldn't see any area beyond the asphalt or all i could see was a big tire wall. i jumped at the chance to ride with kurt when the students could ride with the instructors and was in awe of the ride. basically redlined the whole course, loved that car. we "smoked" the cayanne turbo  . much thanks to bill jay and his advice and patience. it's going to be a long trip. i think i'll just sell my cars and buy a mini-van...
nah.....

Don Wohlfarth 04-19-2004 11:33 AM

Jim, must have been a hell of a ride with Kurt. That 3750 rpm redline sure sounds like it's screaming. :D

Nah Jim, that's George and his long nose targa. He was driving the piss out of that car until clouds of smoke appeared in his rear view. Good thing it wasn't major.

Whassup with Steve's car?
He couldn't get it to start in the morning, so he drove the jeep up to SP. Kurt advised him to go home and try it again after sitting. So that's what he did and it fired right up, he drove back to the track, got teched and then it happened again. Next time don't shut her down between stations Steve. I still think you should have got the PCA mug prize for the person that drove the longest to get to the event. ;)

I'm almost positive that's what caused your problems. I'm glad it was something as minor as a CDI box, I knew we could figure it out, no need for towing. Luckily my spare CDI came in handy.

I knew that already, the whole idea of the event is to learn how your car handles and to learn proper driving techniques, not who can muscle their way around the course the fastest. The other 911 drivers(carrera's, SC's, and 930's) were respectful enough to give some space between cars and wait for the signal to pass. Even the 944 drivers were using the track properly. I guess some people thought this was their chance to speed and drive reckless, or that they were Steve Mcqueen in Le Mans. You are right Don, alot of people weren't paying attention to their instructors. My instructor kept pointing out to me the people who were driving horribly because they weren't listening to to a word the person in the right seat was saying.

Everybody has things to “unlearn” when first starting out! I knew about apexes, turn-ins & spinning from years of auto Xing. My big hang up was using all the track. To used to using all of the right lane!

Steeling yourself to rush a blind corner or hill crest will take even more time. I’m still very interested in what the flag station has to say, as I approach the rise full out just before the entrance to the roller coaster at VIR!

Sounds like the HPDCs are still great intros for those who decide to go on to DEs & beyond. But get used to people not paying attention to their instructors, just don't become one of them :!:

Never that Dave, I was lucky to have an instructor that took his time to make sure that I was understanding what it was I was to do at each turn.

That's what I was trying to get the hang of. I was concentrating on driving the line more than I was on going fast, and there was great communication between me and my instructor which helped me improve my skills.

Good to hear you had a good time at the event. HPDC should have a warning label though. ***WARNING*** Track events are highly addictive.
