Spoke too soon. Driving home today, the car wasn't pulling like it did in the morning. Scanned it when I got home and knock sensor 2 fault is back. At a loss as to what to try next. ASG thinks we should have the ECU examined to see if there is some broken solder somewhere.

Check for anything loose or rattling on the motor, transmission or exhaust. A loose heat shield or an accessory with a bad bearing can fool a knock sensor. As can a loose baffle inside the exhaust.

Also, if you have solid or semi-solid motor/trans mounts, try putting the stock mounts back in -- the stiffer mounts have been know to trigger knock sensors.

Between the motor rebuild cost thread and this one maybe it's time to buy a Miata.

Unfortunately, I was getting the same fault when I had the stock mounts in there. I talked to ASG about trying stock mounts again, but he said if I was getting the fault before it would probably be a waste of money.

And it’s not that I’m getting knock (at least that I know of) but that the sensor itself is failing to the ECU. And when the ECU thinks the sensor is bad, it pulls timing since it can’t detect knock.

I talked to Behe and he thinks I should trace the wiring.

My thoughts too..

I'm afraid to ask, but can you send me info on them anyways?

Actually doing shorter gears may have dropped down the priority list. One of the reasons I was thinking of shorter gears was seeing how other 964s pulled hard on me out of corners. However, one of the things I've been dealing with is a knock sensor fault code and the resultant pulled timing that really affects power when you only have so much to start with. I had tried various remedies, but finally just replaced the knock sensors. That seems to have hopefully done the trick.

I went for a drive yesterday and I'd forgotten what this car feels like with full (chipped) power. It launches hard out of corners now, and is so much fun everywhere. So I may follow my original plan of doing minor weight reduction over the winter (RS carpets, radio delete, RS heater pipe) and then see how the car feels next year on track.

So I was told one thing on the fly but have more concise info now.

Trans 1: 95 G50/20, 6spd, LSD, 40k mi,
SOLD

Trans 2: G50/20, cup gears (assume that's gearing), LSD, reinforced side flange, 20k mi,
Currently on hold due to sale of other trans.

Trans 3: Actual cup trans - Not for sale

Me: oh, that actually sounds kinda reasonable
Also me: WTF? That’s 1.5 miatas. How is that reasonable?

...said the guy who has never driven a track-prepped Miata in anger! I dare you to post the same after racing one for a weekend.

Agree, though, they just ain't no Porsche, but they are a lot of fun (and cheap to race).
