It's not. And I wasn't kidding about the "luggage compartment". Those two super thin fiberglass trays behind the wheels are considered the "luggage storage area". More info: http://www.sportscardigest.com/1969-...rofile-photos/

Porsche's rule book interpretation is a thing of beauty. "Ja, ja - das ist eine strassenauto". I mean, the Circuit de la Sarthe is largely made up of public streets, so they weren't wrong...

Other cool 917 trivia: it has a 912 engine. Seriously. The 4 cylinder 911 variant we all know and love was originally a Porsche 902, and it's engine was a Type 616 modified from he 356 days. The *real* Porsche project number 912 is the Mezger-designed 4.5 liter flat 12 in the back of the 917.

Maybe they would take a truck load of rusty 356s in trade.

is a race car, but I see a practical street car here. Look - seating for two:

And a spacious luggage compartment complete with collapsible spare tire:

Good heavens, that is a beautiful car!

Watching "Le Mans" and seeing these cars still for sale NEVER gets old. By far, the pinnacle of sports car motorsports from 1965 -1972, but, unfortunately, also probably the most dangerous era, too.

In this day of PDK, traction control and power everything, I feel like a man behind the times.

Whether it's $2.5 million or $25 million, I'd still rather own one of these than any Porsche race car made after it. But, I'd also rather have a W-RS spyder w/ it's flat 8 than a 917. After all, it's a "roadster", and these are coupes.
