That fun race was something. I waited until the last minute on whether to put on wets or leave on slicks. I could still see rooster tails from the Group 2 cars, so I decide to put on the rains. This is usually a 5 minute job but at just that moment, my nitrogen bottle ran out of air, so I had to jack the car manually and use a big torque wrench on the center locks. I barely got done in time. Dennis Howard was calling on the PA for me to get to the grid, since it is mandatory that rookies do the fun race. Eric Rupert heard it and came over to give me a hand finishing up and getting strapped in. I made it to the grid with no time to spare.
I started in 3rd place on the outside. When the green dropped, I couldn't see anything is the spray except the lights of the cars in front. I could only judge my braking zone into 1 by watching where the cars in front were braking. The two cars in front were Keith Alexander and Lynn Wilson. They have teamed to drive an SRP II at Daytona and have driven pro races in Grand Am and Grand Am Cup. They have lots of experience in the rain and they were turning 1:30's, while I was cruising doing 1:36's. I didn't change my set-up for the rain, since it was forecast to be dry and sunny for qualifying and the race. At one point, I thought everyone else came in early because I couldn't see any one in front of me or any one behind me. But I finished the race in third, where I started. It was quite an experience.
