Ok. So buy new battery, bring battery home, put battery in, nothing. No click no nothing. Check new battery, it's dead. Back to the store.

Battery is in, car is turning over, put not catching. Some new gas in the tank and a can of that STP water out treatment. Nothing. I took off the breather and put some gas straight down the carb. Now I get a little chuckle. I can get gas to come out of the carb tube, the one that fills it (no expert on carbs). I also found that one spark plug wire was broken at the connection to the plug. I pulled that plug and found that it is almost black with soot and other junk. I am pulling the other plugs and replacing them tomorrow. My dad said that when I was trying to start it that a couple puffs of smoke was coming out the tail pipe. So I assume that means I have some spark.

Thoughts?

Ryan,
First off quit wasting money on STP gas dry. It is 98% isapropal alcohol. Instead of spending 4bucks on a bottle, just buy an $.87 on a bottle of rubbing alcohol...........same thing.
Remove the dist cap and make sure the contacts in the cap,and rotor are clean. A little emory cloth will clean them up nicely.
Don't forget that thing has a choke.

Ok so I changed the plugs and wires, checked the dist cap and tried it again. Now I can get it to start but not idle. And it is shooting what smells like gas and oil out of the tail pipes and out of the driver side heat exchanger. It will crank and run on it's on really rough for a short time and then cut off.

So is the gas and junk coming from the exhaust the result of a stuck valve?

If so how do I fix it and if not what do I check to try and get it to idle correctly?

Man does this thing stink.

Sounds like just alot of bad gas. You can drain the tank and refill with new. You might also have some rust/scale in the tank. Was it full while the car slept?

No wasn't full while the car slept. This isn't something that will burn off on it's own?

Follow up of now that the car is most likely going to sit again. At least for a few months till I can get back down here, do I need to pull the battery and keep it where it can be put on a trickle charger. Cranks all day with the new battery and I didn't want to let it go dead.

The charger is a good idea. Also fill the gas tank before you park it again. add some staybil to the tank. I would add a little extra and run the car for a few min, if you can. Try and get the "good gas" into the carb.
