I like it a lot, but with caveats. It is a great "equalizer" track where low power cars can play on almost equal ground since the big boys have nowhere to flex their muscles. The down sides, as mentioned, are the lack of safe run-off and the roller coaster known as the carousel ride. That turn is fun a couple times because the g's are tremendous, but it tortures cars and really gets almost silly after a while IMO. The trick is to throw away lap times and take that sequence at ~75% to save the beating on the car. Personally I think the track is a great exercise in car control skills, and the relatively low speeds make it a good learning tool. Unfortunately, they seem to have squeezed a 10lb track into a 5lb bag so the whole experience on track and in the runoff areas is "compressed" into a less-than-ideal package.

I did it with Potomac in June and had such a blast in the 944 that I signed up again immediately to do it with another club and I was better at it. I loved that I didn't constantly have my arm out the window and my car could do what it was good at: turn.
Then I did the main circuit and found that I had a great time even with my lowly car, passed a bunch of much faster cars and could hand with a lot of others. I'm looking forward to the June event, I'll be curious to see if I have the same opinion as I did. I like the variety. I don't know why the loathing of the track by some...the facilities are nice, it's fun to do something different and still local. |

Maybe they should just rename it the 944 amusement park.

I voted for the "I love it" choice - but that is a bit strong. I like it better than the other Summit Point tracks, and there seemed to be less animals to dodge so far compared to main track. The hole West VA complex doesn't get me too pumped up - wish the owners would improve it a bit (repair surfaces, kill wild animals, ...).
I enjoy being able to practice turns, and since my car is still understeering, this track allows me to slide my car more than I can at the main track. I do find the carousel to be harsh. I like VIR better. I anticipate I'll like MO better. |

However, the first time I saw a video of Shenandoah, I said "Hmmm, I think I'll save my limited track time for the courses where they'll actually have a PCA race." If I had the time to do 40 or more track days a year, I'd consider going. But I'll be lucky to do 18 track days this year. With so many choices out there where PCA holds races, I'd rather practice on tracks where there are competitive events. I can't help it that I'm a slow learner. Flamesuit on, don't care. :) |
Meh... I can take it or leave it. Once a year is the max for me to be honest. To me, it's just not a *fun* track. I come off track trying to hold my lunch down, not pumped up about a good run. I agree with all of the 10lb track/5lb bag, laundry list of features, etc, comments. MO is what Shenandoah should have been - that's a technical track that is a hell of a lot of fun.

Out of all the tracks we drive, I personally feel that Shenandoah is the best and safest place to hone car control skills. Sure, it doesn't have the rhythm or elegance of the other tracks, but I view it more like a series of specific car control exercises. Shenandoah is to learning how to drive what Etudes are to learning how to play piano. Sure, an Etude isn't a symphony or anything, but it can be fun. I also think that, overall, Shenandoah is a safe place to learn car control skills.
That said, I cannot imagine going more than two times a year, but I do want to go at least once. |
