The speedo drive came out of the back.
|
:-O
My '74 never did that... I'll have to call the old man, he had a Tangerine '72 1.7. Was it a failure so to speak, or a failure to tighten something? |
i have no idea... My guess is that it was the first time car car had really run through the gears and gotten up to a sustained higher speed in 10 year. Due to that it just worked out. Keep in mind it has a rebuilt side shift(not original to the car) so it could have just been worked out during the process.

Speedo drive is held in by a "set screw" (an 8mm bolt if I recall, maybe even cone tip). Look for a threaded hole in the area of the drive. Maybe the screw vibrated out in the glee of being back on the road or something.

Thanks Jim... I have all of the parts assembled to put the thing back together... hopefully some time this week.

Car has been running well. Drove it in teh rain and 40 degree temp w/ no heat or defrost this morning. i am hating life right now, but the car ran great!

Wow! If it rains, I drive my Vanagon that has no heat or wipers.

You don't have HEs?
|
no, wasnt in the budget :) got a set of 1.7s around you dont need?
|
You can install 2.0s. Those are still available. Mine went with my 914 but you should be able to find 2.0a on e-bay. You will also need the muffler as the assembly was different. It will also give you a minor bhp bump but on a 1.7 any bump is welcome.
