1) better be able (and prepared!) to do it w/ two wheels in the dirt.
or
2) don't attempt it.
It sounds like a harsh rule but it reduces people attempting low percentage passes. So it actually makes racing safer.

3/4 rule does not apply w/ walls. Thats covered in the rules.

Ding ding ding. Steve, you have provided a great summary of the lesson from this thread.

I do have a provisional NASA racing license, and have just helped my 18 yr old daughter complete a 2 day SCCA race school. I also re-read the NASA rules earlier this week but things didn't sink in, but you state it so simply. Nice job. :)

And Rob, thanks for posting and bringing up this topic, as painful as it might be. You've helped me learn a lot.

BMWCCA has a strict no contact policy and at the drivers meeting they remind you that you must report all contact. The reality is that no one reports incidental contact.

In the case Rob has posted here it could go either way and would probably end at the same spot that NASA landed. The end result for Rob's car would have been the same also. Spec e30s can run with BMWCCA but the stricter rules regarding contact (And the fact that tires are free in BMWCCA) often deter a number of spec e30 entrants.

SCCA also prohibits "metal-to-metal" contact (although I don't know how that differs from just "contact" since most cars are metal, and those that aren't can't have metal-to-metal), but in any event, unless it's a big one, the drivers would need to report it, and they rarely do.

I was over at HyperDrives instructing at Jefferson on Saturday (don't ask why I did that shit) when my friend Matt was involved in a 5-car incident on Turn #3 on Main. An S2000 dropped oil and took out 5 cars including some other S2000s. The video was horrifying as one car flipped and went OVER the top of the camera car. Thankfully, all the drivers walked away unscathed. The cars did not.
