Just took the 911 and my Passat here and was pleased with the inspector. I've been to some stupid, awful, poo-for-brains inspectors in VA (ask if you want to know where), so now that I've found a good one, I wanted to pass it along:

Just wanted to follow up on this same Shell station as I was just there again today.
My daily driver Passat picked up a nail in the left front tire.
I first went over to Mr. Tire in Rosslyn. The manager there said "Sorry, I've only got two guys working today, come back tomorrow".
Next stop was a few doors down, at NTB. "Sure we can do it. It'll be $39.95, you have leave your car here (or wait) and it'll be ready in 3 or 4 hours". No thanks.
My patience was running out, and I decided to try at the Shell station. I had good service last time, lets give them another shot. Five minutes and Ten bucks later, I was on my way with a repaired tire!! :D :D
I pulled in near the pumps, got out and walked over to the garage. There was a guy sitting there eating his lunch. I explained that I picked up a nail, and if they had time to do a tire plug within the next 30 minutes or so. The guy put his sandwich down, grabbed his tools, and walked out to my car. He found the nail, and plugged the tire right there on the spot. He even asked me how many PSI I would prefer to put in the tire and he filled it accordingly! The whole thing took under five minutes. I asked him what I owed, and he said $10. I was so pleased with the service (and the price), I gave the guy $5 tip. :)

Two things: for tire plugs, just buy a plug kit at auto-parts store. $5. Keep it in the trunk. This really isn't brain surgery and a very easy DIY. Do not put plug, however, into sidewalls and don't plug a tire you'll be racing on (or even driving at exceptionally high speeds). Second, that VA inspector at the Burke Centre Mobil is a Porsche owner (his brother has one also).

So where can we go to get a fudged emissions inspection?

A fellow bimmer guy took his winter tires to be mounted there on dedicated rims. He was installing them on the car and heard a rattling sound from one of the wheels. The technician had dropped the plastic piece that shields the wheel from the machine into the tire, trapping it inside. So he had to go back to get them to do it again. That combined with the fact that they quoted him a lower price that they charged in the end means I won't go back there.

I'm only a year late to get in on this thread, Lupin ...but where are the places to avoid?
