Hi Greg
it was not me, but I saw your car at Intersport. Very nice. Artie started it up after his work and the sound was great. I was checking on my engine at lunch. Perhaps you saw Kurt Mickelwait, that is if the other was a 912 with lexan splitter and spoiler. :D

rs911t
04-02-2003, 02:40 PM
Thanks John. No, I don't believe it was Kurt. I only saw the front and it didn't have his Lexan splitter, nor rollbar, etc. Pretty sure it wasn't him.

While we are BSing about cars spotted, I thought that I should point out that there is an imposter in Reston, so please do not become confused. It looks like a certain black '77 Targa, but without the 3.2 badge.

The imposter's driver has even gone so far as to shave the top of his head to make the counter fit complete . . . . so beware.

If this is from the last DE the car is a ’72 T w/MFI. 6X15 painted steel wheels are unusual. I’ve been looking for a set (that don’t cost as much as the car) for our ’71 for years. I believe he said he was from Middleburge or some point west of here. It was pretty stock, no sway bars, stock bushes, but w/a pair of Kirky racing seats

Dan M
09-22-2003, 01:28 PM
Thanks guys.

They are VDO gauges installed by the PO (Oil temp, Oil pressure, Cylinder Head temp, Voltage, and Clock). It looks to me like it is a vinly covered fiberglass console and it ties into the base of the shifter knob and goes back to the hand brake. I'm not sure where he bought it but he spent a small fortune with Performance Products so I'm guessing they are the source. I really like the console and the shifter boot.

If you like, I can try to find a few minutes to snap some closeup shots later this week.

Is that a 6X9?
I'm constantly searching for a place to put some decent size speakers in my car. I can't use the rear deck because it's the firewall. Mine's a Cabrolet. I have speakers in the door panels and in the panels next to the rear seat. It's probably a little better than the single speaker in your dash, but real tinny.
I like the gauge set!

William Miller
09-23-2003, 04:45 PM
Charlie, I was thinking that we could make a simular panel for the A/F meter and one or two of the other functions. If we just use the top 3 inches of the box we can still use the bottom half to hold junk.
Do you have AC switches on the top part of your's?

Dan M
09-23-2003, 05:14 PM
I don't know the exact measurements off hand but it's smaller than a 6x9 more like a 4x6. I think they stopped using these in '74. I wouldn't suggest going with this since you would have to modify your dash and the added sound wouldn't be that great.

i think they all appreciate their 911's - but aren't as excitable as we tend to get... :)

There's one or two reds ones I have seen several times near Union Station. Saw a "seasoned" S a couple of weeks ago parked a few blocks away.

Hey, that could have been me. Except my top is always on. Dark blue 81 SC Coupe. Sport suspension, cloth seats. Imported from Germany into New Orleans in 86 under the old one-time exemption rule. Later moved to Buffalo and kept in a heated garage where she slept peacefully for about twelve years, driven sedately in nice weather. Then to me. New synchros, vacuum lines, chain tensioner upgrade, turbo tie rods, stainless steel exhaust, miscellaneous adjustments and fixups, and ready to roll.

I saw a parking lot just filled with Porsches yesterday! 911s, 911 turbos, Cabs, Boxsters, Pepper pots you name it. All late model and looking good too. I was looking to see what the reason for the gathering was when I remembered that I work for HBL and I was in the Porsche showroom looking out at the lot...

I've watched "Spy Wars" at least three or four times now and all but the first one because I knew that one of the green 912s that Redford drives was Kurt's. Kurt told me that the filmmakers used two different cars and I forget which scene was the one with Kurt's.

I saw 10 Porsches from all years. Some were stock some were not. They looked like some kind of yuppy gang. Instead of flying colors they were all flying stupid grins. Fuel tanks topped off with testosterone, 50hp shots of adrenaline and some very creative driving to stay togeather no matter what traffic and lights they ran into. ( gotta love the way they took over the 2 lane road in Winchester) This gang must have been threatening looking since people who saw them started to sport the same grins and little old ladies ( in green escort wagons) held the road for them. People in vans were so scared they almost ran off the road trying to get out of the way. Whats this world coming to? :)

I saw this beauty parked diagonally in two spots at Home Depot. Carbon Fiber hood, mismatched body panels, hand painted brake calipers . . . in short, the real deal. But the real thing that caught my eye was the license plate frame, which said, I quote, "Let the a$$ kicking begin." That sounded like fun to me. If I had not had my three year old daughter along, I might have just waited around for the a$$ kicking.

P.S. It is amazing how low and small my car looked in comparison to that "sport compact."

P.S.x2. What a loser 996 owner taking the pictures! Note the Starbuck's cup in the reflection. Good thing the Porsche has cupholders.

An 80 SC being put on an eye catching diet with some sweet backdating.
An 81 SC in a nice shade of light metalic blue.
Today I was followed in traffic by an arest-me-red 356, man that kid was a joy to look at!
I finished my day going over a. 85.5 944euro.

Richard Curtis
01-19-2007, 04:52 PM
Somehow, the long post that I wrote about spotting the GTO doesn'tshow up. There appeared to be some problems with the site this morning. What happened:

Nope, it was a '59 GTO, I think a 250 GTO if I remember correctly. I've only seen two before, both in museums. I pulled into my neighborhood Sunoco station this morning to gas up the truck. There sat a bright red piece of early-Italian sculpture. At first, I thought it was a replica. Nope, replied the 50ish fellow dressed in all sorts of Prancing Horse memorabilia (ditto the older fellow with him). He was very nice but appeared to be in some sort of hurry. Car had a roll cage of sorts (I didn't get long to inspect it) and I think I spotted a helmet in the hatch area. Borrani (sp?) wire wheels. Guy finishes gassing it up, gets in, turns the key -- you can then hear the fuel pumps whining -- hits the starter button and they chugged out of the station. Had '59 Virginia historic plates on it (they're white, BTW). Sweetest engine sound you could imagine. I said something to hiim about you don't see these things driven every day and he replied, "What man can build, man can fix." He's probably a dorki.

That sound is forever etched into my memory. I was in Monterey, CA in 1988/89. On Del Monte Ave, about 1/4 mile from the Naval Postgraduate School, was a Ferarri dealership (since relocated). One afternoon, I was standing on the lot admiring the art (um, cars) as one of the mechanics backed a 328GTS out of the garage. He pulled off the lot, accelerating hard onto and down Del Monte toward US Route 1. God I can still hear the wail of the engine. I've never heard any car sound like that, ever....

Poor Scott! I used to work with a guy who could easily get his buttons pushed when it came to parking next to his car. A few of us used to find his car way out in the parking lot and park so close to him that he couldn't get in his car:p . VA Steve,
It was me that you saw on Linton Hall last Saturday. The Dale sticker is a leftover from the PO. I just haven't gotten around to removing it yet. He is a huge D.E. fan. The car is actually a '79 Euro SC. My friend (PO) put the Carrera badge and tail on it when he painted it about eight or nine years ago. You might see my wife driving it also. She loves it. It would be great to meet some local Dorkis. We don't get to drive it as much as we would like. The baby seat doesn't fit in the back seat. It might ba a little loud for the little one too. Shoot me a PM if you would like to try and get together.

Ok I'll do you one better. Lanna and I were enjoying a nice day and I stopped by the local burger hut to grab a take out order for my son. (he had to work on this nice day) I parked in the "oh don't park near me spaces" way out in the next area code. I come out and some jackass has parked, what was left of a Ford pickup right on top of my drivers door. He got a little shitty with me when I asked him to scoot over so I could get in. (My skinny little ass couldn't even get in my car.)
I think it kind of suprised him when a Porsche owner threatened to jerk him out from behind the wheel and stomp a mudpuddle in his ass. He moved, and all ended well. Some people have no brains.

It could have been me except for the plate and my wheels aren't twisty. It's black too. ;)

I hope that guy is nice in the rosewood car, being he has blessed on his plate. Although I have been witness to many with "holy" plates driving like an atheist or a**.

STeve, the Carrera you saw is not Ted's. I am positive I got next to it at a light on Nutley St. today and its interior was all black. Ted's was beige. But it was a very sweet car. Muffler tips said it was something nice, but they were not THE pipes. I was on the bike and two lanes over, so I could not talk to the guy. He was in his 50's, grey beard and baseball hat.

}{, I'm pretty sure I see that red LH regularly around Vienna and Merrifield, though I haven't gotten a look at the license plate.

Was it a M491 coupe?

If so I have spoken to this guy. Nice guy, forget his name. Used to stare at his car on the bus ride back from Middle-school as it was always parked at his house. Last summer he was washing his car as I was driving by in the 911, I stopped to say hi.

Love these threads.

Saw a light-ish blue SC or Carrera driving north on the GW Parkway today around noon right by National Airport. Was heading south, and just saw the car for a second, but it looked a lot like arob's new ride.

Beautiful day for a drive, was a shame I was on my way to what turned into a seven-hour long fantasy baseball draft.

On my way home tonight I was following a black Carrera with a light interior down PW Parkway. The plate was Virginia SMJ 777, I think. Va Steve, do you know this one? He pulled into my side of the neighborhood. I also pass a house on the way to my in-laws in Reston that has what looks to be a brown SC in the garage with a 944, and a couple of 944s under covers in the driveway. Is this a fellow Dorki?

This is the first time I have seen the Carrera. I have been driving past the house in Reston for the last 11 years. For as long as I can remember the brown 911 has been on stands in the garage. One of the 944 was uncovered partially and looked to be in good shape as I drove by.

Next time you drive by, see if the 911 is a coupe or a targa, long-nose, mid-year, SC, Carrera, or 964 (I assume it's not newer if on jack stands for 11 years)... Maybe one of us will make an offer to get this vehicle back on the track/road/AC where it belongs.

I have been gone from this list for a couple years...what happed to Ted and his car? Who has the story? I suspect Ted has the story. But it goes something like this:

1. He took a new job, and spends a time away from DC.

2. He sold his 911.

3. He purchased a slightly newer p-car.

He still visits the Dorki Board every now and then. If you want 'details', try sending him an email or PM.

I drove through the city and saw a ton of nice 911s. Including one silver/gold Targa parked in Bethesda with the roof off and a ticket on the windshield. :) Then I found this in the municipal parking lot in Bethesda. Anyone know the car...Full track prep. Almost a peru red, clay color with yellow wheels. Front bumper like }{'s and "track scarred"

I saw it driving about a 1/2 hour later. Looked like a female driver or a man that needs a haircut! :)

Your thinking of Gregg Wilson from Delaware. He has a brown euro 911SC that runs in F. He's wicked fast and best of all, he drives to the races and drives back. Old school to the max. He's a tech at Winner Porsche.

Woops... checking in late here.

Good meeting you Rick, thanks for letting me stop by and stretch my legs. Traffic turned a 2h drive into 3.5. Plus my friend I was giving a ride to is a smoker and I didn't really stop for that.

Now let it be known, I do in fact drive (drove) my car.

Hi. Over the weekend my company moved in to our new location in Campus Commons in Reston. Today was our first working day in the office.

When I pulled in to the parking lot this morning I saw a beautiful Arctic Silver 997. Then in the afternoon when I was leaving I saw a nice, clean, black 944. Are you guys on this board? My car is the Ocean Blue 996 cabriolet that was parked under the tree by your cars.

I'm headed out right now for a drive on a nice cool evening.

We moved in to the top floor of 1902 Campus Commons. I haven't really explored the campus yet -- I've only been to the gym and deli in the building next to ours.

Also welcome Scott to our world as a new 911 owner and Dorki!!

So he comes by my office Friday talking about a "fun" car - a Boxster he was looking at Carmax. I take him down to Intersport 1. to look at my freshly dyno'd 930, and 2. to look at their inventory, and 3. get a mechanic opinion on a used Boxster. Chuck Drake's 911 Cab was looking awfully sweet. It caugh Scott's eye and I could see it was reeling him in.

Next thing I see is a short email Saturday on my BBerry with a .jpg and the title "I Got It!" Maybe we can all parade over to Cafe Sano one day, but be careful of cops on Sunrise Valley.....
