I went to two auto parts stores over the weekend trying to find some thick synthetic. oil for the hot rod. I was told by the dude at Advanced Auto Parts that Mobil 1 has discontinued making a 15 -50 weight oil. The thickest syn. stuff I could find was a 10 - 30.

My oil gets pretty thin on hot track days. Anyone know if there is anything thicker then a 10 - 30 in a synthetic that does not cost $10/qt (Amsoil)?

Thanks,

I think Mobil 1 has new marketing execs who are adding "value" by confusing the customer. They still make the 15w-50, but it is now called "Extended Performance". Could the switchover to new product names, labels, and SKUs be momentarily disrupting the supply?

See... http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_Extended_Performance_15W-50.aspx.

We use 0w40 Mobil 1 @ the dealership on any Benz '98 or newer. Might be another alternative.

The issue on the older cars (with looser tolerances) is the need for a oil that won't weep out of the car while its parked  . The older air cooled cars need at least a 10-40 (in winter) and a heavier 15-40 or 15-50/20-50 in the summer, in track conditions.

I think "marketing" has caused a name change and perhaps a hiccup in delivery because of this, judging by the Mobil1 link someone posted.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good summer grade synthetic other than Mobile11? Just curious. Seems to weep a little in the 356 where non-Mobile-1 did not leak?
