Guys, how wide can I go on a rear tire on my regular body? I know I can do 16x9's without a problem.

Can I do a 16x10? Would I have rubbing issues with oil lines? Would it require caster/camber changes?

Thre is a guy in Florida (Gary Stratton/Stratton Motorsports Winter Park Fl) that makes wide wheels when you send him 16x7's.

Anyone heard anything good or bad about this person?

The Lindsey Racing/FIKSE choices are just too expensive for me right now.

Howard,
Interesting timing. I called Stratton Motorsport last week. He told me I could fit a 10.5" rear wheel with a 275 tire on my Carrera bodied car for rear. He said I could do this without moving any oil lines. He also said he's been doing this for years on customer cars. I'm VERY sceptical about this. In my experience I've seen someone put a Fuch 9" wheel with a 1" spacer on the back of a Carrera bodied car with no rubbing issues.
As far as a Turbo bodied car I've seen people run a 345 rear tire on an 11" wheel. I don't know if they had to do any moving of oil lines though.
I'm currently looking into the Linsey Racing wheels in 8" by 17" front with a 235 tire and 10" by 17" rear with a 255 tire. They will cost about $1000 less than the Stratton wheels.

What are you aiming for? Stock 88 911 has plenty of tyre for the track with 245X45X16 on the rear.anything more is way overkill and increases drag reducing speed and fuel consumption. no need to roll fenders with that. if you are just going for looks, I don't think you will get too much over 265 or so without serious rolling etc.

I have run 255's on my SC and they are tight, very tight. Different brand tires will fit a little differently, but I highly doubt 275's fit without some surgery.

I don't know any Dorki who are content with "plenty".
If it ain't overkill, it just ain't enough!

I did a little searching on Pelican Parts and found that Bill Verberg is running this set-up on his Carrera bodied car:
Rear: "9.5" +19mm o/s wheels w/ 275/40x17(11" x 25.7") tires are the widest that I could fit on my car."
Front:"8" +23.3mm o/s to +31mm o/s are the most common fronts. 235/45x17(9.4" x25.4") are the widest tires that I could fit."

He has a ton of info on this site:

Dave, I don't know if your 2.4T engine could overcome the drag created by 245's. :(

Good call on the Lindsey's, Ted. Those are definitely the hot setup for our cars. Another good page is here:

http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars/WheelWts.html

It has wheel weights, offset, backspacing, etc for all the factory wheels and most of the popular aftermarket ones as well. There are more helpful links at the bottom of that page (one of which is to the one you posted from Bill V).

I will eventually be getting some of the Lindseys for track use when the time comes. I have spoken to Mike Lindsey and he is very helpful.

Keep us posted.

The SC/Carrera and 964's all have the same size rear fenders. Now, some of the older cars, given their "hand made" nature, may be off a little bit. I've seen fit, comfortably, 9.5 x17's with 275's on them. I run 1/4 in spacer with my 9x16s with 245's and have at least another 1.0 inch of clearance on the inside and outside. 255's should also fit without much hassle. A 10.5 rear could work, if the body work is tweaked along with camber settings and ride height. But do you really need 285's on the back of a ~220 hp 911?

It's never about "need" here in Dorkiville.

I am also running a 1/4" spacer on my 9's in the rear with 245's. The outside is close. I haven't looked at the insde clearance.

245s on 9s, 225 on 7s on the SC. No issues front or back with 22mm, 28nn T-bars. I might try the ’44 8s with 225s from the back of Linda’s Carrera.
