All,

Just got back from really fun but wet nearly 300 mile round trip to Hershey. It was like pea soup up there and about 30 deg cooler than back home here in No VA.

I joined Richard Curtis' USAT convoy leaving Tysons area at about 6:00 AM sharp. We headed up to Fredrick to meet Pari and his convoy, arriving there about 6:45 AM. Little B meet everyone with donuts and OJ and while a few of us took care of business at the local gas station, the rest of us munched on the fat pills and chewed the fat. We left by 7:00 AM and arrived in Hershey around 8:00 AM.

Pictures to follow...

It was more like 250 and not 300 miles total trip.

I didn't see too many good deals today. The last time I went to Hershey in 1999, there were several big catalog vendors offering stuff at showfield prices. I didn't see too much of that today.

I was looking for a duck tail. I saw one, painted blue and in rough condition. The seller was asking $750(!). I though that was really overpriced, knowing you can buy a new duck/lid from Performance or Mid-America for ~$400. I thanked the seller and walked away.

I too was there and didn't find much in the way of hidden treasure. I was primarily looking for a chin spoiler. The only other item that I saw that I wanted was a BMC air filter, I just have trouble justifying $100 for an air filter. No soup for me today!!

The last two pictures above are of a very good condition 66 or 67 912. I had owned a 67 912 about 8 years ago and it was same color as this one with 5 guages and a 5 speed 901 trans. The owner happened by as I was snapping the pix and he was very talkative about the car. He'd been a 356 guy and thought this would make a good change for him.

I wished I had more time to talk with him but the convoy I was following home was ready to leave and I didn't want to hold them up. I was getting the feeling he was looking to get back into a 356, muttering something about problems with his 912's carbs. It seemed like a very nice example and I had that feeling all the way home that there was a good deal/opportunity missed.

I think Fleabay is killing swap meets, the pricing at Hershey this year for many things was well over what you could get on Pelican/here/Ebay. The selection also gets smaller every year, I guess we will have to see what happens at the June swap, should be more commercial guys at that one.

Ditto; what Mike said. :( The drive through the rain, however, was excellent! :) Thanks for letting me roll with you, Dorki crew.

Nice pictures. Thanks for posting them Rich. I had a ton of fun driving with all of you in the convoy. I was driving the silver 944 (trying to keep up with all of the 911s). I managed to find a few small parts including a fog light lens for $10. (Mine was damaged pretty bad from a rock). I did see some overpriced items but it was my first swap meet so I really can't compare it to other meets. Overall I had an excellent time and look forward to next year.

I also followed the gang up to Hereshy and had a great time. I had never been to the swap meet. People that went ssy that it was disappointing, but I loved it. I never realized that such deals could be found. I have always relied on mechanics to keep my car going. I was missing a big part of the Porsche experience. This weekend I decided to learn things myself. Thank you Dorki. You have opened my mind.

I think the highlight of the trip to Hershey for me was the caravan going up, it was really cool when we joined up with the other p-cars right before Hershey. I had a blast leading the pack, and competing for the #1 spot with Ted and Kevin was exciting  .

I snoozed on some strut tower braces. I found them for 50% less than MAM. I walked away and when I came back they were gone. I also passed on a new painted center counsol for a Boxster/996. Painted Aritic Silver with Black Leather and only asking $200. I decided at the last minute to keep everything black. Even though I came back empty handed I had a great time meeting everyone and enjoyed the caravan up and back. A special thanks goes out to Brian for being the gracious host...eventhough he did not make the trip.

thanks Jim.
yeh, I just wish i coulda gone up! so i figure the least i can do is get my butt out of bed, and meet you all in a rainy parking lot. If i don't make it up next year, I'll feel so bummed i'll probably bring a grill to the parking lot!
thanks for the dorki window stickers Michael!
