View Full Version : Allied Machine Shop - Sunnen Machine

Just got back from the Allied machine shop on Rt.7 behind Don Byer Volvo picking up RL's flywheel. BTW: They reconditioned in 1/2 hour for $67. :D
Anyway, while waiting for the invoice, I was looking around the shop and happened to see a Sunnen machine. I asked the guy if that machine could be used for Alucil cylinder reconditioning. He said 'yes' and they have the pads and appropriate Sunnen silicone paste as well. He said they they have not used that machine in over 3 years now as they don't see many 'Alusil' cylinders much anymore....said Mercedes and Porsche mostly used them. So, you 944 guys and SC folks with Alusil cylinders, this shop had the appropriate equipment to remove the contaminants and recondition these otherwise 'disposable' cylinders. This is a FIND IMHO.

NICE get Charlie. Like the price on the re-surface as well.

Out-frikkin-standing get, my man.
This is a real gem of a find! Right here in our own back yard. Amazing!

They did a nice job on mine as well. I found this place through Doug E's recommendation from months back. Man, do they have a lot of stuff in there. :)

I must have missed you by just a few minutes. I dropped off my 931 manifold to have some cracks welded. The shop looked great and I also saw lots of interesting pieces. Has anyone else used them? I’m looking for a good Porsche machine shop so I don’t have to go through a middleman.
NOT happy with Kenson on Picket in Fairfax. Place is a mess, no one ever seems to be working, had my manifold for almost 2 months with no obvious work done to it.

Where did Eric take his block?
From Eric's comments, Dopki should be warned off that shop!

You take a gander at the Catapillar head sitting on the cart by the door?!?!. That thing probably weighs as much as our 911 engines.

The owner must not need it too badly, that was there last month when I was in! :)

I did see it! Relatively small valves, squarish ports. Must have been 5’ long. I’d like to see the guy that carries that out to the truck by himself :!: Also saw some 4 cylinder Dr. Porsche creations and a truly beutiful aluminum double overhead cam head ready to go. Looked like it was for an Alfa 4 cylinder
I’m still trying to get the 931 ready for this season, but the manifold may prove an insurmountable obstacle. No after market piece, just need a good fabricator. Have I ever mention how I feel about the water pumpers :x .

Not to kick a dead horse here, but stay away from Kenson in Fairfax. My parts took twice as long, the crank and the head look great, but the block.. Well after a hone job that you would find on an old Chevy engine, and not much else, it looks like I have a new wine rack in the garage...
I will be taking my new block to allied to have them go over it.. Who should I talk to over there?

Eric,
Sounds like Allied might have the equipment AND the skills to save your block. Certainly hope so!

Eric,
Don't have a name for you, but he was a tallish and skinny guy, wearing a hat.....about 40ish. There are only about 3 folks who work there, won't be hard to pick him out. Tell him the porsche guy who picked up a flywheel last week and who was inquiring about the sunnen machine told you to stop by. Maybe this should jog his memory.
Print this out, read it, know it (specifically 2.5 re: silicon lapping) and show it to the guys at Allied just to make sure this is the procedure they'll use. I inquired about the machine and he knew about the paste and pads, but its better to be safe than sorry.

Great find Charlie!
BTW I sent an e-mail to a guy at KS last year when I was looking into this.
I was supprised that he actually replied. He sent me a hard copy of that Manual. Really happy with the great service.
Charlie, I mentioned this before, can you start a section to post information about shops, resources and parts?
The post could be a simple the name of the shop. Members could post info about the shop including numbers, links etc.
Maybe do it by category: Machine Shops , Tire Sorces, Alignments, Body, Paint.
Could you use the space taken up by Sponsor's corner.
If we had this all in one spot we wouldn't have to search all the threads for "that shop somebody recommended in that thread 3 years ago.. I think the name was...."
Wadda Ya think.
How'd the cam timing go?
I have seen a few posts about "Allied Machine Shop"... I might just have to go and visit. Can they do engine machining? P/C? Cranks? All the items?
Thanks.

All around great shop! A walk through will show a wide variety of cars represented. Have positive personal experience with their Porsche and BMW work.

Eric,
Hook up with me when you're going to Allied. I have a fly wheel and a crank for them to check out. ANdy
