Based on the conversation last night, I need a couple of other things for the drop.
I have:
1 jack and 2 sets of jackstands (one is the 6 ton HF set - supposedly will reach 24"). I have about 6 slices of a 2 X 10? to put under the jack stands. Full complement of sockets, metrix, stars and metrix hex; screwdrivers, dead blow hammer, wire ties, bungee cords for 1/2 shalfs, Porsche jack pad, Ted's engine stand a/o tommorow...
I Need
- Second jack.
- Second jack pad.
4 x 4 sections. (I have seen this on PPBBS lists, but don't know if it's necessary)
- Cinder blocks (do I really need this?)
- What else????
Jim will be bringing the engine adaptor a 32 and 36 mm oil line wrench.

With the tall jackstands and the engine to jack tool you dont need anything else but your floor jack. I used the exact setup this summer w/ no issues. No second jack, extra set of stands. If you have a height problem remove the rear bumper. It comes off in 10 minutes and gives you lots of extra room.
Other than the oil line wrenches the only 'special' tools I can think of are the allen sockets to remove the axles.

Your plan: Are you dropping it together or seperated?

together, right Steve? :)
I have Marc A's cinder blocks and boards, as well as my 4x4 wood blocks. I have a jack, but my feeble back would suffer too much if i lift it to put in the car.

It seems that the standard Dorki practice is together, so I'll do it that way.
Jim,
If you need me to come grab it, say so and I will.
Or maybe someone else can chuck a jack in the car?

I don't know about a standard, but it really depends on what your getting at.
I can't recall why you are doing this other than to get a good look and check things out. (btw, I think this is a very good reason.) If this is the reason then I agree take it all out. If not, I still think it's less work to just take out the engine. (Also less things to break.)
Last time I took out the engine by itself then the trans. I ended up putting it back in together.
One thing I did do (I think as an upgrade) I put a connector for the reverse light so it is easier to get to. For me, disconnecting and worse connecting the reverse light wire is by far the most challanging thing in dropping the engine without the trans.
Either way have fun!

Bill, "most" of the local drops have been engine & tranny together. It's easy to separate them on the ground, out of the car.
