Following was posted over on Rennlist. I know there are at least a few Dorkis who might like something like these to play with.

For your amusement -- two pictures of the axles Cartridge supplies to professional GT3 RSR/RS race teams.
Among their features (other than the fact that no axle has failed):

· lightweight, high angularity (unlike, e.g., tripods that respond less favorably to extreme bump and droop) ten ceramic ball CV's for better power delivery;

· specialty high strength steel (with proprietary processing) components – everything other than the dust covers and the boots;

· aluminum dust covers;

· aerospace tear/crack resistant boots;

· enhanced inboard and outboard cooling;

· machined in integral speed sensors;

· matched specialty high strength steel lightweight fasteners;

· fully serviceable inboard and outboard -- both for examination and individual parts replacement;

· all parts available separately without the requirement of purchasing an entire car set; and

· filled with Krytox GPL 217.

Operating in the realm of 'what can I use from this', I located this:

The grease I presently use seems to be pretty good stuff and I'm not sure there is anything to be gained by exotic upgrades. Still, I wonder how much this 'Krytox' stuff is?

I wonder how much the axles are, and how much the rest of the race components budget would be for a car using these axles :shock:

The Motorsport SuperCup axles for the 2004 GT3 Cup car are about $600 each and they are nothing compared to these babies. Fortunately for me, the older Cup cars use the street car axles, which are much cheaper.

THis from the vendor, who provides an interesting perspective:

These axles are not appropriate for a street car that has more suspension travel than a race car. Price is north of $8000 per set but, given the durability, the cost per race mile is excellent -- in fact, better than anything available. Further, if you are spending millions on a race team and your axles break when that could have been avoided for a few thousand dollars, buying these is considered a bargain.

Well, if I ever run the Le Mans 24, I'll make sure to pick up a set of these babies. In the meantime, the street car axles have held up just fine in my car. We replace them periodically and have never broken one.
