Greg - Nice way to spend Father's Day :D
Have a good trip and be sure to check out the track museum ... quite a few gems are hidden in there. It's been a few years since I was there and definately plan on getting back one day soon.
My brother went for the inaugural (sp ?) F1 event and had a blast. He said the infield viewing from the spectator mounds was great along with the grandstands right at T1.
If you've never heard an F1 engine at full scream you are in for a quite treat ... there's nothing like 18k rpm's :)
BTW, let us know if you are able to work your way into the paddock area. Supposedly the security is tight but rumors are out there of people who have managed to sneak in

The Pit Walk is happening at Indy again this year. Pits are open Thursday - you can walk through the pit area, ogle the hardware, and peer into the garages. Several mechanics & engineers around to talk to , and the occasional driver. JPM was signing autographs last year.
GET THERE EARLY!!!! The traffic gets nasty. Go early or you might miss it.

Tony, great idea. Unfortunately, we'll only be there for Sunday's events.

Greg:
Have a great trip!
Related P-content story:
Years ago I towed our IROC to Putnam Park (50 minutes west of Indianapolis) from CT. After the event we stopped in at Indy and pulled the trailer (open) into the parking lot next to the infield museum. The Winston cup cars were practicing on the track at the time. We came out a few hours later and there was a crowd around the car. When we got up to the truck / trailer (expecting to see the thing on fire or totally stripped  ) People started asking for autographs, what kind of car it was and whether we were gonna' run against the Chevys and Ferds in the race. Could you imagine?
BTW, IMHO Putnam Park is NOT worth towing out to with all of the great new(er) tracks that are closer. It was newly surfaced when we were there and hadn't cured properly. And, the IRL / Champ cars had been there testing and had ripped up the surface.
