Greetings all.
Looks like the bank 1 catalytic converter on my 2000 996 failed:( Replacement options seem to be: 1) Porsche oem $2,000+, or 2) Magnaflow "direct-fit" with downpipe/outlet pipe, etc. $1,000.
Just wondering if anyone has opinions.
Thanks,
john

How do you know that the cat failed?

In MD, 20 years qualifies car for HISTORIC tags. No Emissions, so you could by-pass the cats.

Was just about to post this. Cheaper insurance on the car, too! Maryland is not strict about use of "historic" vehicles like Virginia is...

Fortunately, Maryland exempts those over 70 years old from inspections and I luckily hit that memorable milepost a few days before the state inspection was due. Was also thinking of getting it registered as Historic, matching its driver, lol.

Lots of cats have been replaced because of bad/failing o2 sensors. Davico sells an aftermarket for a 996, I've put them on other cars in the past fwiw.
For many Porsches, the identical 02 sensor without the "Porsche" brand is available on eBay for a fraction of the cost of the "Porsche" part...

Reputable sellers have bosch and denso sensors for <$80 all day, worth the risk on ebay? your call, best of luck.

Understood about the sensors, unfortunately there’s a loud rattle from the cat when I bang on it, and the Durametric scan confirms it’s bad. Planning to go with a Magnaflow unit when they come back in stock.

You might want to buy a replacement now before the Tariffs kick in on new inventory and prices jump 25%.
I have been thinking about replacing the cat on my 924 because it doesn’t filter the pollution like it use to, smells like exhaust. My car doesn’t have an exhaust leak, just a hollow cat. When you knock on it, the cat rings hollow.
Thanks for doing the work finding suppliers.
