Head-scratch...how does one find a 996 with the aero package for $20k? engine issues?

Sweet Karl! A whole other generation with the Pcar bug.

James has the HPDE bug. He used his 2001 Bullitt Mustang for the last ten track days but it was not up to the task

It took two years to find the car. She was listed on the Bird in Pinehurst, NC. Picked her up yesterday and made the 345 mile danger ride home ;)

1999 Carrera with a factory Aerokit.

Lots of projects to complete but she runs and drives while he fixes her up.

To specifically answer your question, rebuilt title. So she has been pre-crashed, perfect for a teenager and track days :D

Enjoy! - Looks like a happy drover in that pic!

fwiw, there are many $20K or less 996's out there.. more often a cab than a coupe.. maybe a tip and not a stick and nowadays 120K+ miles.. or rebuilt titles.. but if its going to be a DE/Racecar, some of these may not matter.

Thanks, very good point about tips and Cab’s I didn’t consider them while searching for James new whip. The girlfriend also wants a new/used car. Please send along any leads for a 1999 996 with full leather under $20k. No other real criteria, Tips and Cabs are okay. Unlike the boys hot rod, condition is everything for her fun car 🤩

Thank you John for the wheels and tires.

James fitted them today and the car looks and drives better with the correct size wheel set ;)

***Ended up going with a set of hardback Sport seats so no longer needed***

We would like to add a Tequipment roll bar, for a sunroof, and Euro bucket seats. If you see anything available for a good price please send them our way.

Thanks

Almost one year in James has been enjoying his hot rod.

We pick up a set of hardback GT3 sport seats from a dorky and they are very nice, thanks :D

Had a issue with the 25 year old AOS and sent the car in for a replacement last fall.

The only problem to date was an intermittent fail of the crank sensor. James managed to replace it in an afternoon. He would not let me turn a wrench.

He did a couple of HPDE’s with the car last season and we will see you at the first HPDE later this month :)

Ohh almost forgot option code 09991 is the “Sonderwunsch” or special wishes program. Still trying to figure out the options on this car but it is turning out to be a fun little car. It is considered an early build “99” with a build date of 7/98.

Found a very nice set of Sport Design 18” wheels. These were standard on the 996.1 GT3 and optional on the 996 Carrera, IMHO one of the nicest looking factory wheels for the 996.

Nice get. Any knowledge regarding IMS bearing? Also, that era is prone to HVAC flapper door material deterioration & failure, which messes with ability to direct interior air flow properly. SSI has a devised a fix that we had done to our 2000 Boxster.

Speaching of which; is there a difinitive web page that pin points the problem areas for all Porsche models? Other than endlessly trolling enthusiasts sites for the random tip

The 1999 model year and the early 2000 models used a dual row IMSB that has a very low failure rate, less than 1 percent. The failure rate was so low that the car was excluded from the class action lawsuit against Porsche because it simply did not fail. IMHO the key is to find one with the original IMSB that has not been replaced with snake oil. Cylinder scoring is more of an issue in this model and that can be traced to leaking injectors as a source of the problem. Flow test and replace as needed.

BTW: Porsche of DE has a sale on replacement short blocks: $6300

We have not experienced a problem with the HVAC flapper door material in either of our 996’s so I am not able to comment on this.

Our experiment with an early build 996 has been quite fun. Early builds prior to August 1998 were hand built on the same assembly line with the 993, rumored to have a better build quality. There was a fire at the factory in late 1998 and Toyota was brought in to automate the production process and cut production costs. Cheaper materials, single row IMSB and other components significantly reduce costs along with quality. The early build 1999 cars have a few additional unique features like a throttle cable instead of drive by wire and amber headlights, except for the Aerokit cars that only came with clear headlights. Altogether this makes for an analog driving experience.

Fascinating how the 996 replacement engine prices at PoDE are all over the place, from $6300 to $33,000!

Yes pricing is all over the place.

Turns out that is just the core charge from P of DE.

Sunset has the same available for $8500 plus a core of $3800.

IMHO not a bad number if you need a 3.4 engine.

Might just buy one and put it on the shelf ;)
