As some of you may have heard, the Mrs, daughters, dog and cat, and I are moving to Silicon Valley. Der Baron was just picked up and is headed west now.

I am driving with our dog Jedi in our old 4Runner, and carrying plants, bikes, and whatever else makes more sense to drive than ship or carry on the plane. I head out Saturday.

I have been given the suggestion to download some audio books to listen to on the ride. Anyone have some good suggestions? I've already read "the Art of Racing in the Rain." Motorsport themed stuff would be good, but any suggestion other than self help books could work. I'm beyond repair.

Best of luck with the West coast adventure. Sounds like fun.

I don't do audiobooks, but I would suggest anything narrated by Samuel Jackson would be entertaining.

If you're into science, I enjoy the way Neil deGrasse Tyson writes. I also really enjoyed "Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!"

Take care Mortimer!

Thanks Wally!

I have read “ Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!" and enjoyed it.

I'm not much of an audiobook person (prefer reading) and don't know your tastes in fiction or non-fiction, but if there are Patrick O'Brian readings availble of his Aubrey-Maturin novels those are excellent and unlikely to run out unless you drive really slow. (Napoleonic War / Royal Navy).

Hopefully it will be raining for the entire trip and you can drift the whole way from Baltimore to CA.

I listen to a lot of audio book. I mostly listen to non-fiction / pop-science. I really enjoyed listening to Adrian Newey's 'How to Build a Car'

I’m sure much of the country affected by drought would appreciate that too!

Apparently the movie is available only in printed book form and has not been made into an audio book yet, but there is a music CD that could provide some enjoyable listening. It has a traveling theme (i.e., Dallas) https://playbill.com/article/debbie-does-42-tracks-cast-album-includes-karaoke-and-more-com-110745

The MD Library system has an app called "Libby" that allows you to borrow and download audio and e books to your phone.

It's worth the time to use.

Hoopla (also free through public library) has better selection than Libby.

I have about 100 books on my hard drive and if you haven't left yet can make you a thumb drive of 5-7 of them.

Books I've loved:
If you haven't read "Water for Elephants" you must get that. The audiobook has 2 readers (I usually prefer one) but it works really well.

"Reamde" by Neil Stevenson is a great book with lots of story. It's really long (I took out the CD version and listening to all 17 disks realized this was "Part I of II" and there were 17 more disks). It would take you most of the way there.

"Seveneves" by Stevenson is also good and long and better known than Reamde, but I enjoyed Reamde more (it's like at typo of "ReadMe").

The best book I've read in the past 10 years was "Return to the Reich" by Eric Lichtblau, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist who happens to live in Bethesda. It is a completely true (and unbelievable) story a Jewish boy who left Germany at age 15 and went back to Europe during WWII.

I am not comfortable with a proctologist ever sending me a message about a “Thumb drive”. :butt:

Best of luck in your West Coast adventures. Give PCA's podcast a try: https://podcast.pca.org

Hopefully you'll get to Monterey Car Week yearly since you'll be so close.
