Curiosity killed the cat.

Does anyone know why a car dealership would ask for a buyer to sign a CARFAX report? I have had two separate dealerships ask me to sign and bring in a signed copy of the report on two separate occasions. In both instances the dealers are asking for me to sign the top of the page months after each car was purchased?

I have not signed the reports and do not plan on it.

I wouldn't either, sounds like they're trying to hide behind Carfax if you later discover an undisclosed defect.

If they asked you to sign it at the time of sale to acknowledge that you saw it, fine. But months (or even days) later?

Um... NO!

It is common practice. Often carfax issues show up months/years after an issue occurs. Thankfully it is shown on the carfax when the item was first listed on carfax. It shows that the dealership is disclosing all items to you, that they are aware of at the time of sale. I have my clients sign every page of the carfax report.

Not sure why they would ask you to do it months later other than if they forgot to do it initally.

I understand at time of purchase. Why after purchase? One dealer told me the salesperson wouldn't get paid and the other just sent me a copy without explaining. The cars are purchased and I have the title. My radar senses something fishy about it.

If they are part of larger dealer groups it might be a requirement for their deal audits. I am happy to pull carfax's of those cars for you today if you want me to double check the findings. If they are clean i dont really see the reason to not do it.
