Jefferson circuit was fun for me last year too!! Though I was in the Stang and the wife in the Bimmer. Can't wait to take the p-car out on the track.

Great pics!

Thanks for the Pics, Pari.

Is that a Cayenne in one of the pics?

Anyone know how they are shaking out and any possibilities of them showing up in next year in DE's?

Parenn911

Yeah Charlie, it's a Cayenne Turbo.
That topic came up in the class session. Basically they still won't accept Cayenne's for DE's because they supposedly are "new models, and something being said about their size is an issue, but it's still being debated. I spoke with an instructor that drove that turbo and he said he wasn't too impressed with the handling. He said it was fast as crap but around the turns, you don't have the confidence and room for error as you would do in a Porsche sports car. It makes sense, look at how high off the ground they are, even my car is lower than that. 8)

Pari, thanks for the pics and write up. It looks like a fun time at SP. Whassup with Steve's car? Hope it's not serious. I hope they keep the Cayenne separate from the sports cars in DE events. Even though it's fast, it's still a truck.

Steve, you missed out on some great fun! You should have continued on with the event, I still think you didn't have to get her towed back. A couple runs around the track would have warmed her back up!

It is so hard to quantify how dissapointing it was not to participate. I was looking forward to that for weeks. :( Thanks for the loan of the CDI box, I'm going to be learning a lot about that item in the next couple of days. The car seems to run fine now, I hope that's all it is/was.

I also learned again why I love my AIR cooled 911!
This beauty blew a radiator hose and spewed coolant. So two 911's were out of commission in the first lap of the slalom, and had to get towed.

The only track time I got was the trip to the skidpad. :(
I have no idea how you could work on that car, there is no room to get your hands in there!

"First of all WTF is a Golf doing on the track with a bunch of Porsche's, isn't it a Porsche Club event. "

That's a little harsh. HPDC is a driving skills clinic to allow drivers to understand the basics on how a car handles. The event is open to all marques. This allows your brother, sister, spouse, improve their driving skills. I'd almost bet money that everyone learned something.

"It was funny how people were driving so horrible, just gassing it the whole way through the turns, tires screeching and then into the gravel off track. One Audi A4 missed the apex so bad, they ended up in the pit area. I guess the TCS drive's for them, or at least that's what they think."

I dunno, maybe they didn't pay attention to their instructor? ;)

saturday was good too. we had a honda civic and an audi in the group. i guess i'm over the hill because it was very hard for me to overcome my natural instincts to slow down and i found it hard to learn the 7 turns of the road course, that is, learn a sequence of 7 things rather than 1 thing at a time. it was hard for me to floor it around a turn when i couldn't see any area beyond the asphalt or all i could see was a big tire wall. i jumped at the chance to ride with kurt when the students could ride with the instructors and was in awe of the ride. basically redlined the whole course, loved that car. we "smoked" the cayanne turbo  . much thanks to bill jay and his advice and patience. it's going to be a long trip. i think i'll just sell my cars and buy a mini-van...
nah.....

Nah Jim, that's George and his long nose targa. He was driving the piss out of that car until clouds of smoke appeared in his rear view. Good thing it wasn't major.
Whassup with Steve's car?
He couldn't get it to start in the morning, so he drove the jeep up to SP. Kurt advised him to go home and try it again after sitting. So that's what he did and it fired right up, he drove back to the track, got teched and then it happened again. Next time don't shut her down between stations Steve. I still think you should have got the PCA mug prize for the person that drove the longest to get to the event. ;)
I hope that's all it is/was.
I'm almost positive that's what caused your problems. I'm glad it was something as minor as a CDI box, I knew we could figure it out, no need for towing. Luckily my spare CDI came in handy.

I knew that already, the whole idea of the event is to learn how your car handles and to learn proper driving techniques, not who can muscle their way around the course the fastest. The other 911 drivers(carrera's, SC's, and 930's) were respectful enough to give some space between cars and wait for the signal to pass. Even the 944 drivers were using the track properly. I guess some people thought this was their chance to speed and drive reckless, or that they were Steve Mcqueen in Le Mans. You are right Don, alot of people weren't paying attention to their instructors. My instructor kept pointing out to me the people who were driving horribly because they weren't listening to to a word the person in the right seat was saying.

Everybody has things to “unlearn” when first starting out! I knew about apexes, turn-ins & spinning from years of auto Xing. My big hang up was using all the track. To used to using all of the right lane!

Steeling yourself to rush a blind corner or hill crest will take even more time. I’m still very interested in what the flag station has to say, as I approach the rise full out just before the entrance to the roller coaster at VIR!

Sounds like the HPDCs are still great intros for those who decide to go on to DEs & beyond. But get used to people not paying attention to their instructors, just don't become one of them :!:

Never that Dave, I was lucky to have an instructor that took his time to make sure that I was understanding what it was I was to do at each turn.
My big hang up was using all the track.
That's what I was trying to get the hang of. I was concentrating on driving the line more than I was on going fast, and there was great communication between me and my instructor which helped me improve my skills.

After 2 DE's I really got hooked. I was comfortable enough with the madness to really learn something. For me at least, I was so overwhelmed with line, braking, shifting, traffic and so on for the first event it was almost work. After I settled in though it's sooo much fun. Looking back the first HPDC I did was such a great experience I wish everyone could try it out.

Great job Potomac PCA for putting on such a valuable and fun event!

Here are some nice "tow of shame" photos. In a matchup between my SC and newer metal, what my SC lacks in speed, it makes up for in tow-ability.

BTW: That's not a smile, it's a grimace.

my SC does a very random, and now very infrequent, no-start. i think it has to do with the connections at the fuse panel like there is corrosion in the connections. it's really scary ($ ) to turn the key and ...... nothing.

Jim, I have been there before! If it is something electrical, it could be a faulty relay socket or a relay. Also as you said it could be the fuse box, check for any green on the end of the wires. My SC's wiring in the fuse box had some corrosion. Another thing to look at is the ignition switch. It also never hurts to swap a CDI box or a coil. If it is fuel related, then it's a whole different world. Good luck.

Pari, It's obvious that you don't have much respect for the FEWC cars. Not really sure why that is but I can tell you this, WHEN you actually come out to a DE, keep one eye in your mirror and don't feel too bad when those FEWC cars are breathing down your neck. It will happen I promise.

I know that this board started as an air-cooled group but as someone said, there are more water cooled guys contributing everyday and more will follow. While I understand that your posts were just in fun, some folks will take offense, we've all seen it before.

Hi Mr. 89-951, who said I don't have respect for them. I was at the HPDC running with a friend who had a real nice looking red 944. They are fine cars no doubt. It's funny because I had alot of FEWC's "breathing down my neck" in the HPDC, and it didn't bother me at all. Some of my good friends own FEWC's, many of which could dust my car in a heartbeat.

I guess this is why you think I have no respect for FEWC's. Well before you go making judgements, reread my posts, and understand what it was I was orginally trying to say before Chris(sneaky jazz) twisted it into a clever joke. I was trying not to leave out the 944 drivers who were in my run group that were also driving well(not only 911 owners know how to drive  ). I was actually giving the 944 drivers respect for driving great. I like all Porsche's, okay well maybe not all(sorry boxster's). Oops, I guess I offended someone again.

Sorry but I'm going to BUTT in here (and it's a large BUTT).

This Board was started to get away from the certain bantering that occurs on the "Other Boards"

Because those who started the board knew each other and their varied senses of humor, we didn't have any misunderstandings while much fun was poked at each other.

The problem with growth is that now everyone doesn't know everyone, so potential miscommunications can occur.

This board is open to everyone, no matter what they drive, and it SHOULD be understood that comments that appear to be less than complementary are just for fun. If someone feels differently, please address it with the person through PMs (Private Messages).

If the moderators feel that the tone of any given thread is outside of our original intended use of this board (to have fun and learn a little), the thread will be deleted and the individuals advised.

I don't have a concern for 1st Amendment rights. Sorry to be the heavy, but the board is growing very fast with quality members. I want it to stay that way.

I would like to correct the facts on page 3 regarding the eating of 944 Turbos by Dirk. I was driving that Red 944 Turbo (also street tires) and was in fact being held up by the Dirk's well driven 911 Targa. The picture are being shown in a backwards order as can be verifies by the sequential file names on the jpg files.

When viewed in the other order, you see the Red Turbo behind the Targa and two cars back is a Silver 996 TT. The next view shows the 944 Turbo ahead of Dirk and the Silver Turbo no where in sight. The only reason I was not even further ahead was that I lifted to give the 996TT a pass.

Good Grief.

What started as, and still is, a place for the local wrenches and road rats should stay just that.

Warning! One persons opinion to follow.

1. We all should know each other and most do so I propose that we ALL use our real names and not esoteric car codes or at least sign with a real name. I have been disappointed to find that I met and chatted with folks from this board and did not know until later "who" I was talking to.

2. All the P cars are good and we all share a common interest in this brand of car. If B.S.ing bothers anyone, they should go elsewhere.
There are plenty of other sites that have information and conversations about Porsche cars. This is a loose nit group of friends and we tend to rib each other here the same as when we are standing around looking at a freshly pulled motor.

Personally I have passed and been passed by plenty of 944s and 951s and I kid around with my wet friends.

Wait a minute Kurt, you're putting all the poster's that use esoteric titles in the same category as obscene phone callers!
It never fails to amaze me that anyone pays any attention to someone that posts anything anonymously. This is the internet at its best, say anything you want without accepting any responsibility for what you post. ;)
OTOH it's probably a good idea that some of the postings are anonymous so the poster could avoid meeting that 3/4 in breaker bar I keep for special occasions.

FWIW, I do agree with Kurt about using real names. Either as part of the logon or signature.

Call me old fashioned. Just don't call me late for dinner.

Wow! I just read this whole thread and could have sworn I was back in my office in the Capitol. Being PC is all fine and good but those offended should grow some thicker skin. Besides, any body who wants to pick a REAL fight on the internet is a wuss. Save it for the track, face to face. If you can't say in front of the person, don't say it, or as Marc said, PM it. There will always be a better driver, faster car, or cleaner car.

So, with that said, everyone elses car sucks except mine.

Ted - I think you accidently typed the word "sucks" when you meant "runs". Common mistake, really. Better luck next time.

Does this mean I can have your 915 with Euro oil cooler? Dibs on the rebuilt engine, too. And the Carrera tail. And the 9" Fuchs (I need track wheels). I mean, hey - you can't take it with you.

Wait, wait! Before you jump; can I have your track tires?

Chris, I will be taking the 9" Fuchs with me.

Jeez, I miss a day or two of reading, then I find out Smackpipes' concours/track machine has been parted out. And to think, he never even got it running again.

Oh, is the B&B still available?

OK, that makes two things I'll be burried with, the pipes and the 9" fuchs

What do you mean "with" the pipes? After stripping you car we could just bury you IN the pipes.

For my first post on this board, I missed signing the signiture line when I registered. No attempt to hide here! I also thought my car was familiar to many, expecially Dirk, Kurt and John B.

Hope to see all later today in Mid Ohio. I expect I will have a burned out tail light or two before the first run session.

Carl, knew exactly who you were. Like you're the only guy in town with a red 944T. :)
You wouldn't have that problem if you had a 914!

I don't know Don. There seems to be more and more 914s out there. We just know there are more colors out there than red. 8) Now mine could be classified as the ugly, multicolored 914.

Talk about perceptions, here's a great story for you guys. Now everyone probably knows that my lovely husband drives a Ruf RGT. This is the car he waited 18 months to have built and he would like to be buried in it if he dies. I'll admit it's a great car but not what I like to drive on the track, although I did for a year until my 914 was drivable. Instead I've chosen to radically alter a 914 (ala Mr. Wohlfarth). I've been dumping (literally) tons of money into making it fast rather than pretty. I love my 914 as much as Gary loves his RGT. Ok. At the Zone 2 VIR event apparently some woman got pretty up in arms about the fact that Gary gets to drive the new, expensive, pretty RGT and "makes" me drive the ugly 914. Seems Mr. Church got an earful from her. I didn't know anything about this until the drive home from the event when I almost fell out of the 'scursion I was laughing so hard!!!!! So the next time any of you see Gary please remind him of how he's "holding me down" by "making" me drive the 914....geez throw me in the brier patch!

Hey, why don't we all come over to Betty's with rattle cans of paint and try to beautify her teener. A Dorki public service activity...what d'ya say?

Jim, excellent idea! It would be the perfect Mother's Day present. Maybe we should all plan to show up on Sunday with one can of spray paint each. Everyone should show up with their own favorite color, no fair comparing notes, no experience needed.
I almost feel sorry for Gary, "the fact that Gary gets to drive the new, expensive, pretty RGT and "makes" me drive the ugly 914."
Pretty obvious that the woman didn't know Betty! :)

The mental picture I get when I think of all you guys showing up with various colors of spray paint it more than I can handle. It's nice to know the Dorkis look out for each other so well! You guys truly are

While I appreciate all the helpful concern about the paint job on the teener, rest assured that it will be painted shortly. Should be finishing up the bodywork this weekend and then off to Maaco for a "racing" paint job. You know the kind...50 feet at 50 mph.

Gary wants to put a sign on the side that says "Her OTHER car is a '97 C4 Cabriolet" thinking then maybe then people won't feel so sorry for me. Course his other car is a '95 M3 so perhaps he shouldn't get off so easy.

I heard teeners were slow...but only 50 mph at track speed? :P

Does Gary's M3 have plates that say "Carerra"? I saw a red M3 on Friday in old town with those plates. PCA sticker in the window and all.

That was Gary. Our offices are on King Street. He had that plate on his C4S and when he sold the car couldn't bear to give up the plate. He gets some strange looks especially from BMW folks. What's cute is the front plate. It was lost a year ago so he put his Targa Newfoundland plate on so as not to attract attention. It says 914. I like it!

The 50mph is for pit row. They have speed limits ya know. :P
