I purchased a 1999 911 Cabriolet with a K40 radar detector system already installed. It is not functioning properly. I need to find a local installer who knows Porsche's and who does the job right. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks...Chris Osborne

Thanks for the kind words Charlie.....

Chris, Go ahead and PM your problems to me and I'll give you a ring. If it is an installation issue, no problem. If it is a malfunctioning unit, we can pull it out and you can send to K40.

We are a Bel and Escort dealer if you want to install a new one.

Vu,
Can any of those be installed "stealth" for those south of the river? You know like, North Carolina

Absolutely...the difficulty with p-cars is finding a non metal area in the front and rear of a 911 to mount the external parts of the detector behind. We always find a way though

Not to get off topic, but what is your set up in your cab?
I saw a thread on PP where someone put a 8" speaker with a fibreglass enclosure in the smuggler's box. I believe a hole was cut for the speaker facing the foot board. The fibreglass box behind it was sealed.

I'm not looking for getto pounding base, but I do want to hear some.
I mostly listen to classic rock.
The PO had a decent head unit (Eclipse?) and a six disk changer. Speakers and amps (like 15 watts x2) were lacking. I recently picked up 2 decent sized amps. (Used) I think they will do a lot.

I don't have much more in the budget since I'm painting the car, but want to make the best of what I have.

I have the following:

-Kenwood mp3 player
-Kenwood 50 watts x 4 amplifier (two channels running the front components and the other two are bridged to run the woofer)
-Kicker 8" woofer in a custom built center console
-A/D/S Components (6.5 woofer with tweeter) with custom door grills
-4 inch Kenwood two ways in the rear with custom rear panel grills (powered by the head unit)

Simple and clean sounding not for the boom crowd though. You'll have to listen to it for yourself sometime.

A minimum upgrade would be:
-A good pair of component speakers on the door
-A two channel amp about 50 watts by 2

From there it's kinda sky's the limit, or should I say the budget is the limit. Let me know what you range you would like to spend and i'll configure something for you.

Currently we're working on a 350z with will have 7 monitors/screens, four subs, back up camera, DVD THX 5.1, and much much more......I have no problem helping people spend money :)

I'll take an inventory when I get a chance.
I think the front speakers are Rockford Fosgate 5 1/2 or 6 in the doors.
I believe thay are rated max 100 amp 4 ohms (About a year old.)
The rear speakers were previously in the doors. They are a rectangular box with maybe a 3-4" and a tweeder I think Boston Accustics.
I think these too are rated at 100 amp 4 ohms.
I believe the amps are both 100 x 2 at 4 ohms one is Rockford fosgate and I think the other pioneer. I don't think they are really high quality, but anything is better than what I had.
The little amp that was in the car was Alpine. (Not big enough to push the speakers to get any base. I always thought Alpine stuff sounded tinny.

One thing about the head unit is it is digital. I believe the volume goes up in single didgits from zero to 75. This may give me enough control over the big amps.
I'd like to see a picture of your center console. Is the speaker mounted sideways? I'd also like to see how the roll bars mount.

I'm sure it pails in comparison to the Stang. That sound system is impressive Vu, you had my ears ringing the whole way home.

Pari,

The system in the Stang was built when I was sponsored by Orion Car Stereo. At that time I was also working at a car stereo shop and the owner allowed me to build it so that we could use it as a demo car for the store. I competed in many IASC (a sanctioned car audio group) events. With close to 1000 true watts, the Stang has registered 140 db. Sound quality score was also on par with other factory sponsored cars.

AS for the Porsche, I wanted to build a system that did not weigh down the car, look fairly stock, yet offer full range sound. I'm pretty happy with the final results.

Chris, have to watch the VA state police though since their radars can detect radar detectors w/o jammers. I was with a friend last year when he had a radar detector when an actual state trooper turned around to pull him over and he had a stealth one. He was ordered to remove the unit right there so the officer could write down the serial number and was fined. Va state law gives 2nd chances on radars but if you get pulled again WITH the same unit, you lose the unit and pay steep fines.

Being in VA, I contemplated on the Passport 8500 or Valentine 1. Passport had a VS2 radar jammer which I purchased. Works great so far even passing a trooper with it on.

I run a K40 in my 993 all the time in VA and have never gotten any attention for it. One unit is built into the front air dam and the other on top of my varioram and peeks through the rear grill. LED lights are mounted between the gauges. Any cop who gets me will not get it out of the car and I've heard it's very easy to beat these tickets as well as get your portable detector back from the court. If you fight it, any local court will dismiss the case because they don't want it to get challenged in a higher court, where they know the law will be struck down, as FCC reg. allow radar detectors and states can't override it. Or at least I heard something like that once.

You're right Rick. If it does get confiscated which a trooper will without a problem and fight it in court, 100% you will get it back. It all depends how much that detector cost you and if its worth the trouble going to court.

Also did you know that even if you don't use your detector and stored in a console, you can still get a ticket for it as long as you have a power source in the car.

Does K40 have jammers in them?

Rick, I looked up the K40 and it does have VG-2 in it which is why you don't get the attention. I know the VG-2 gun that troopers have are very sensitive and can pick a car from a far.

VG-2 Protection
K40 systems are passively and actively designed to prevent detection from the police VG-2 Gun (radar detector detector).

Vu, I like what you did with the center console. It looks sleek.
Chris, you might want to check with Myer Emco if you have one in your area. They might be able to service radar detectors. I know there is one located in Gaithersburg and in Washington DC.

VU, I was thinking about something like that using the existing console as the front. I assume the speaker is facing sideways.
How deep is the speaker? Thanks for some inspiration!
I think I can do something like that. Any details? If you did it again, what would you change?
How about a picture of the door and rear enclosures?
Thanks again!
