Here's the video of my new personal best at Summit Point Main, this past weekend. Yeah, I know the video sucks, I think I'm going to be a VBox on my Christmas wish list (hey Evan, we need to talk .... ).

https://vimeo.com/283807919

I was actually on track (no pun intended) to get a couple of 1:19's, but got hung up in traffic going into turn 10 both times.

What's wrong with BobbleHeadCam? Congratulations, Bill! Car's got motor!

suggestion...just based on that ONE lap.

you are pinching off turn two. let the car run out to the left edge of the track on exit, then don't drive down the right side of the track to turn three. that ain't the shortest route. make a line from left track edge at T2 track out to the turn in for T3. you will find that you gradually cross the track center half way there. i teach students to aim for the T3 flag tub as soon as they exit T2 and it takes them straight to T3 turn in point.

if you pinch T2 and drive up the right edge of the track to T3 you are losing time. this is really obvious if you stand in the T3 tub for a session and watch cars.

disclaimer - i don't drive porsches, but i have been racing BMW's and instructing at Summit for 17 years. any suggestions i have may be useless for your application!!

My biggest comment would be to work on throttle application. Seems you are very late and heavy footed....no real builds or transitions....more of an on/off
Make your goal that a passenger has a hard time feeling whne you go from brake to power....
Stable platform is key

Car definitely screams, nice lap and congrats

I teach a different line than marshall but its always fun to try out different lines and go back and check the data....(video, harrys, vbox, aim, whatever it be)

Let me know next time if you wanna try out the Vbox for a session, if I have time im happy to throw it in and go over some basics afterwards...it can be eye opening for sure. Hell a stable camera would be eye opening....maybe just go slower and the pic would get better:twisted:

Thanks for posting that, Bill. Are you still running RE71Rs? I’m trying to work out target speeds for 3, 4, and 10 because I think I’m about 5-10 mph off.

Hey Bill,

Congratulations on the PB, nicely done :D

Yes, still on RE71Rs. The video above is the last run on those tires, since they were basically bald after that. So, on a good note, they really are good all the way down to the cords.

Work your way up in those corners in small increments. Every car is going to handle differently, and you can't really judge the limits of your car by how a different model handles.

Paul said the RE71Rs have more grip than the NT01s, but the NTO1s will last longer. Interesting. Love the RE71Rs.

Impressive, Bill. Very impressive.

Nice lap but will be interested to see this on something else besides Harry's or whatever that is. The vid shows 34 min in T2 which is way too low and I think 88-89 at the apex of 3 is a bit optimistic and speeds seem to be off in other areas. Time to buy a Vbox from Evan.

Aaron, not sure on street tires but w/ a dialed in race suspension / 964, you will probably want to aim for a min speed of around 76 for T3, 96 min for T4 and 76 for T10. Those are just guesses though as I've only driven street tires at Summit a few times and that was a long, long time ago.

Oh, I agree completely. I didn't mean to imply I was comparing my car to your car directly, though it certainly reads that way. I skipped writing out a couple intermediate steps of getting a performance delta of Re71R vs slick with regards to corner speed and then seeing if I could apply that my car to come up with a ballpark since I can find lots of slick data but not much recent street tire data. Though, I suppose to be accurate you would need the same driver and car on slicks and street, so maybe it's wasted effort and I just need to go faster. :)

Wait, is a RE71 a R tire? That's how far I'm out of it I am these days. If so add a few mph. :)

Jim, 96 min @ 4 with street tires in a 964!
Damn, no wonder I am so slow. I poop my pants if I go through 4 at 95 on fresh Hoosiers.

Yeah those are guesstimates but subtracted 4-5 mph from my target R7 speeds.

Agree. Hope to get out more next year.

RE71Rs are technically street tires. But they drive like amazing R-comps!

That's the plan, just have to scrape up the money. Got a spare 3 grand lying around?

As Lara said, it is technically an ultra-high-performance street tire. However, it's basically on par with Cup2, NT01 and R888 tires.

From what I've heard, Hoosiers are ~1.5-2 seconds faster per lap than RE71R/Cup2/NT01/R888 at Summit Point Main; and Pirelli slicks are ~1.5-2 s/lap faster than Hoosiers.

According to the speedometer on my car, on my better laps, I'm apexing turn 4 at 103-105 mph. Not sure how accurate that is, but it agrees with the 1Hz GPS readings in HLT.

You can apex faster at T4 by not bothering with T5 and heading straight into T6. Takes nerves of steel. Also, you have to 'hop up' right before the wall there and do you best not to knock over the flagger's cooler.

Pretty sure the last thing Bill expected when he posted this was to be schooled :)

Are you aware of how Turns 5, 6 and 7 came to be? The story is Bill Scott was sitting in his office one day, watching cars on the original track layout (straight down the hill and turn right about where Turn 8 is now). He soon realized that any car that lost brakes coming down the hill had a reasonable chance of continuing on and driving straight into his office. So, he decided the track needed to be changed to minimize that possibility.

So it's your turn to be schooled. :p

Although, TBH, even though I heard the story from a reliable source that actually knew Bill Scott and probably heard it first-hand, I have not independently verified the story so can't validate its veracity.

Got a slightly better time on Friday morning : 1:20.01. The cold helped the car make more power, but it really hurt the traction. I think if the sun had come out and warmed up the track surface, I probably could have gotten a better time.

This time, I remembered to connect the external GPS sensor I bought from Fumes two years ago. So, the speeds displayed should be much more accurate (10 Hz refresh rate vs 1 Hz of the phone by itself).

Solid lap Bill but I'm wondering why you didn't shave a simple .02 off to break 1:20? Feel like you would have slept so much better during the off-season. ;):p:cool:

(seriously tho', nice lap bud!)

Very nice lap. You still have more in you, you can increase you entry speed some into T10, so as to exit at about 100 v. 98. This will increase your speed on the front straight and should be worth at least .2 of a second.
