View Full Version : Heater Question

I have a little problem with the heater in my 1984 Carrera and I hope someone can enlighten me. BTW, I have the "manual" heat system and the blowers work fine.

The control lever (red knob) on the instrument panel that controls the heated air output (i.e. footwells or defrost) is binding and is not functional. Therefore, I want to go in behind the dash and see if I can unbind this control cable.

There has to be a heated air mixer box somewhere behind the dash; I assume you gain access to it through the front trunk. Could someone describe for me where the heated air mixer box is located?

I am hoping to either unbind the control cable, or at least manually position the flapper valve in the mixer box so that I get a 50/50 blend of heated defrost and footwell air.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks, Bruce

Your instincts were correct! The control cables travel round to the heater box, which is easy to get to from the front trunk. Remove the four bolts that hold the divider panel at the rear of the trunk, and the cables are right there in front.

BTW, I'm guessing you dont have a copy of the Bentley Carrera manual. If you did, you would have seen the great pics of this in the book. Bentley is a must have for DIY-prone owners. Get one - you'll be glad you did.

Tony - thanks for the input. I will check the contol cables in the front trunk and see if I can unbind them. Bentley is now on order; I appreciate the tip. I guess Haynes doesn't cut it anymore.

Doug - I seem to recall you originate from these parts, so you may remember that the temp does occasionally dip towards "absolute zero". Although, this winter hasn't been to bad...yet!

I'm looking forward to those mild Virginia winters...may not even need heat in the garage.

Welcome to the Board Bruce, hope you can make it to the next fun run. You couldn't ask for more helpful, courteous, and knowledgeable Porsche enthusiasts. You will find these are all a bunch of great guys and girl. Good luck with the heat. You will still need it down here, just not as much.

Mine were a problem until I oiled the cables. Also check to see if the bends are smooth. A kink or a tight turn will make them bind.
In this case you might find that someone tied them a little tight with wire ties or something that takes them out of the alignment they want to follow.
Good luck!

I met some of the guys at Doug E's engine drop and I plan to participate in the Fun Runs in 2004. Also will see some of you at the DE's at Summit.

Bill - thanks for the tip about tight or kinked cables. Now I have a little project for the weekend!
