I was wondering if anyone had any experience with:
Gas Tank Renu:
http://www.gastankrenu.com/index.htm

They have a dealer in Rockville:
http://www.loopersc.com

My gas tank has a good amount of rust in it and is about to be 50 years old (does not leak).
I was thinking while I have it out this winter I should get it cleaned out and sealed. I was first thinking of buying a kit and doing it myself, but I think I will have a bunch of other items on the car to spend my time with.

Any experience/thoughts/recommendations are appreciated.

This sounds interesting. My 928 needs the fuel tank refurbished. Feedback would be good.

A little 1-man shop in Mt. Airy I'd been using for gas tank and radiator work finally retired last year. He had recommend Looper as an alternate location.

I used them for my 911's gas and oil tanks. Everything looked fantastic - no complaints.

I used Loopers to clean my oil tank. They did a great job, on time and a fair price. Glen is a good guy.

Loopers did my Mercedes radiator repair (brass core) and I think Scotty B has it running and tested out as OK. They have quite the operation there, I should have pulled my 914 tank to have done when I did it.

I think Kurt said in the past that it's easy enough to DIY once the tank is out. Check out the 'Polishing a T' thread for details of his process.

Do a search here on Dorkiphus, there are a few revelant threads. Including at least one where VG goes through the DIY process, and many citing Loopers.

I've got a shop here in Richmond that boils and cleans them for me. He can also coat, but uses REDKOTE which I have used without issues, but I have seen others online complain about it. I have since switched to having him boil and clean, and I am coating myself using Caswell's sealant. It is the ONLY 2 part sealant I have found, and haven't found anyone complaining of it letting loose, save for a few who admittedly did not follow the instructions

Looper's was very good at this and I do believe they have closed as stated.
You may want to try;

or

I have used neither but have spoken to others that have and were pleased.

Also, depending upon the year, if we're talking 911, it is cost effective to buy a new tank from Porsche. It will be a 78 > style tank.

Thanks for the info, tank is for my '66 912, looks like a replacement is around $420+, although the Dansk repro is a bit cheaper.

Dansk doesn't fit very well especially on the front edge

I have a tank which was in my 75 911...if iit fits and nterested let me know...it has been sitting for about 6 years, but is nice and clean inside...and has been completely POR'd on the outside.

Tito, thanks for the offer, but I believe for 1974-89 they were made for "space saver" spare tires.

How bad is your tank? Is the exterior coating still in good shape? Is the only issue the inside rust?

I'll post some picks tomorrow, tank was not leaking, but has inside rust. i removed it last weekend and noticed the seam (lip) in at least one area had some rust and seemed to be getting soft and thick. I will take a wire brush to the problem areas and post some pictures. It looks like it was out before and they used a tar like substance when they set it back in (for a seal). Very messy to remove.

Couple pictures of the tank. I started removing the rubber paint on it - actually looks pretty solid, defiantly worth restoring. There is some rust in it, I was able to shake it a bit and get most out, but still some loose rust in it. The lip on the tank was a bit rusted but still solid all around, most of the "soft" was the rubber/tar on it.

just to make sure my tank was clean, i put a gallon of muriatic acid in it, sloshed it around ALOT. No residue or rust came out, so i quickly dried it out with acetone, then sloshed POR 15 through the entire tank. can't find VG's tank thread so i will have to look for it.

Gas Tank is cleaned (inside and out) - went with the 3 step KBS system for the inside.

Completed step 1 - cleaning the inside.
Plan to accomplish step 2 (surface prep - etching) tonight when it cools down to the mid 80s.

I have not settled on what to coat the outside with. I believe it is supposed to be grey.

I have been stripping the area the tank sits in - very messy tar like substance was used, but all in all solid. I have some metal work to accomplish on the passenger side J-tube conduit area.
