View Full Version : Reco for Brake Pads that work and don't kill wheels

Does anybody have a reco for race/track pads that don't destroy the finish on the Wheels? I am using HT-70 on the front but have destroyed one set on wheels (currently refinishing them) and another set of wheels are about to be destroyed. Obviously I need them to work as well. Thanks in advanced.

Track/race pads make nasty dust. Period. IIRC PCCB carbon ceramic rotor and pad systems, may produce less nasty dust, but the price is $$$$.

Street performance pads that don't dust as badly, like Hawk HP's, work well, but some track performance will stretch their limits. When we started doing DE's, we used them on our Boxster. The pads did ok at Summit Point, but our first visit to WG, and we used up the pads almost entirely in 1 day (WG has 5 100mph braking zones).

These are the only alternatives as I see them:

Use street performance pads, and plan on changing them very frequently, including midway through an event weekend. You'll give up some brake performance, and some cleaning will still be needed periodically.
Use track/race pads, and develop an obsessive cleaning routine after each session to remove the dust. There's a couple of Dorki's you can turn to for advice. ;) .......but not ME! :p
Dedicate a set of wheels for track use only, and don't worry about the cosmetics. Before and after each event, swap out both wheels and pads (using street pads between events).
Whatever you do, avoid letting the brake dust get wet. If not washed off immediately, it hardens into the hard-to-remove black concrete we're all so familiar with.

I suggest using ReJex http://rejex.com/rejex.html on the wheels. Apply two coats as per directions and it absolutely helps keeping the wheels clean.

Have a set of ugly Betty track only wheels.

Thanks for the input from everyone - I was afraid that was the answer.

BikePump - Will look into your reco but I think a big part of the problem is the stuff is coming off as plasma so heat is an issue also.

Thanks again for the input.

I have had the same plasma issue on my Boxster early on. PFC08s on OE rotors with OZ HLT wheels. Not sure what happened but at one event (and not a hard driving one) shot sparks and burned holes in the finish. Haven't had the problem since (just brake dust) so I don't know if it was a cold-pads-overworked or a break-in issue or a don't use PFC08s with cross drilled OE rotors or what...

One question to consider......what's my event ratio between track driving and concourse? :p

Seems I lose concourse points every time I turn around... sigh... back to polishing the Blackorish Boxster...

I have been running PF-Z, PF97, PF01 and PF11 pads on my cars. zero issues with ruined wheels. dust washes off easily.

Hawk HT-10 on the other hand...nightmares.

Hilarious I've had the exact opposite results with HT 10. They use brass as a binder so you don't have the iron oxide deposits of most pads.

Hook blues are the worst I've seen.

Agree with Bob on the HT-10s. Never had a problem. Now using PF-8s and also not a problem. Pads and rotors last much longer with the PFs, but the Hawks still had somewhat more stopping power.
