View Full Version : Fun Run 5: 9/28
Doug E

After calling the audible at the starting point yesterday, I can now say that my appetite is back for one of our official Fun Runs. Unfortunately I'm tied up each weekend between now and the end of September so I propose Sunday the 28th (in the morning) for Fun Run 5.
For this next run I want to try out a new format: we'll have two groups leaving from the same point but running the route in opposite directions yet meeting in the middle for a break.
As usual I will do the route-planning and prepare all the handout materials for that day. The only thing I ask is that I have a volunteer to lead each group. I REALLY want to run in the pack and enjoy the view ... running point all the time is starting to get boring. I will work with each leader to ensure they know the route inside and out and will also provide on-route assistance (via both hand held and cell phone).
Hopefully we'll have about 10 cars or so per group so that should make staying together easier and also allow all cars to more effectively communicate via the hand helds.
So let's hear it: a) is anybody up for another run? b) is that date OK ? and c) who wants to be the two leaders?
As an aside, sometimes it takes not doing something for awhile to remember why it is so much fun. Thanks to everyone yesterday for twisting my arm and allowing me to put together the run on the fly. My wife had a great time and definately wants to be a part of our next one.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised to see everyone made the run yesterday....uh, except for me
I am definitely up for a fun run since I have yet to make one!! The only small problem I have with this date is that it is the week my wife is due with baby #1! Something tells me I better not ask for that day off
I would love to go on a run at the beginning of the month.

Thanks Doug, for leading us out yesterday and organizing FR#5.

Doug,
Nice meeting you at the run yesterday, it was a blast! That was my first run but hopefully not my last.
I can't make the 28th of Sept as I'll be in NJ on business, but would have loved to go. If the date should change, I'm in.

Doug, thanks for taking the lead yesterday. It's kind of a different perspective being farther back in the pack...especially when all you can see is the F350 in front of you. There was one stretch where the only way I could tell that you guys were still in front of me was from the exhaust smell. I really enjoyed the run..but paid little attention to the scenery. Half of the time I spent watching my gauges, the other half trying to stay on the road without rearending anybody. I think (know)that I need DE to get a better handle on my car. Thanks again Dan l..it was a pleasure to meet many new faces.

Sounds like a good time was had by all. Sorry I missed it. Did the weather cooperate?
Doug E
08-17-2003, 10:12 PM
Rick - F350??? Now that would have been a nice picture.
Greg- yup, weather was fine. As you know we run rain or shine :)
Jim - thanks for the precise response.

Doug,
I'm in for the 28th. Great idea for the opposing loop run, were'd you come up with that one

Ted - I'll disclose the sources of the idea only afterwards when we know if it was a success or failure
Seriously now, doesn't anybody want to step up and run the point for either group ?????????

Rick:
I was wondering if any p-cars got stuck behind that F-350. It was only later as you blew by on your way to Leesburg (clearing out the carbon?) that we knew we didn't lose you.
Nice to see you were able to make it (rejoin) at the car show.
Doug E:
Thanks for grabbing the reins and giving the group a direction. Glad your wife wasn't bored to tears with all the car talk. Can't confirm for 9/28 yet.

Hi Doug,
Great, count me in. Will be my first Fun Run and cant wait to 'ride' in the peleton with experienced 911 drivers to see what can really happen on those country roads....
I should have mine registered by then, actually doing it this afternoon and will be going to that service station you mentioned in prior post for emmisions.

I had to really resist the urge on that last stretch of 7 just outside of Leesburg. As fun as it is to strectch the legs, it's just risky...there were quite a few civilians on the road. That voice inside told me to watch the speed...shortly after I saw three crusiers in a row headed the opposite direction.

Doug,
I'll take point on one of the legs. My wife said she would nav for me if we could find a baby sitter for the day. So far it looks good. Send me what ever route info I will need. I may just do a dry run the week before to get aquainted with the route.
OK, I'm takin one for the team, who else is with me!

Doug,
I'm definitely in! Hopefully by the end of Sept it should start to cool down some, also. I'm having the front end 'refreshed' so I should be ready to stretch her legs a bit by then!

Wow, two Turbos so far... :D
Yesterday was the first time that Lu saw flames shooting out the back of a 911 (rickc's 930). She loved it!

Jim, everybody gets to see it except for me! Sorry I missed Cates...I would have enjoyed the opportunity to talk to the group.
I will be there next time...how far up in front depends upon the radar detector detector, but I am willing to help. Did you see Leesburg's finest while I was out stretching my legs? Causes one to think.
Rick

That 930 was impressive on the run, especially when it spat out flames when I was behind it. WOW!

OK, sounds like we have one of the group leaders (thanks Mackpipes). Now all we need is one more ...
Ted - the route is in the early planning stages now. I'll let you know once it is finalized and I've had a chance to test drive it (probably not until early Sept). Don't worry, your wife will be able to enjoy the ride b/c when the day comes you'll have had enough prep to drive the route with your eyes closed :)

Ow, the 28th will be tough for me. The weekend before is ok, and after should be ok. The last run was a good time...good to see that Rick is at the flame stage. Dunno what mine does, although it spits and pops quite a bit.

I will be glad to leg the 930 out for you so you can see the bar B Q belching out the back. All you got to do is find a ride that will keep up with me ripping around in a loaner Turbo! :D

Maybe we can have one group of early cars...of course I'll need to fix all the leaks on Dino so I don't have to stop every few miles to add oil. Not to mention the fine insect fogger it's become.

OK, so now we have the second group leader (thanks rs911t). Now all we need are some more participants.
I'm going to start on the route after this weekends DE.
I'm game for another run.

Hey all, this is Bill Jay. I have lurked for long enough and the car is coming off the trailer! Will be registering the yella fella for legal road use before then, and would love to go for a run. Are 914s allowed? You guys keep it under 60 right? Any faster than that and the wheels might come off....

Sleepers,
Speaking of sleepers, don't let Kurt tell you his 'lil 'ol 95 hp has bugs hitting his back window while driving. Don't believe it for a second!!
You DO run street fuel in that thing right, Kurt?

Bill - I saw your car at Kurt's last week and based on the looks of what you've got going on in that thing you won't have any trouble keeping up with us. Besides, Justin (jtf914) in his 914/6 is a regular Fun Runner. Look forward to meeting you soon.
Keith- I've been around SP in Kurt's car as a passenger and the only thing I'm certain of is that it has a LOT more then 95 hp :)

I am in for the run, but I will be taking on the task of backdating my fuel injection system around then, so I might be riding along with someone..

Thanks for the invite guys! Looking forward to having some non-track fun with the car for a change. I guess i can probably keep up with the slower cars, so im no too worried after all
As to the mods, they are all cosmetic... Just enough to keep people from sneering too much a the old, slow, half-breed :D

Sounds good, count me in!
Now I just need to make sure I wrap up my house move by Saturday the 27th! Fun Run provides good added incentive.
Have a Marine Porsche buddy on base with an '89 Cab that may be interested, will pass on, the more the merrier!.
Thanks in advance for putting another together Doug, looking forward to it.

The Porsche Gods have not been smiling on me this summer. I have missed almost every Pelican/PCA event, and once again, I won't be able to attend the fun run. Have a great time, drive safe  , and if anyone needs to borrow my hand held radios let me know.

Okay,
I can't stand it any more, I gotta drive today. Anyone who wants to go somewhere for lunch today give me a call. I figure somewhere out west via small back roads. :D If we have to turn around because of water or debris, so be it. Give me a buzz if anyone is interested. This is an informal event. No plan, no route, no stress. I'll be leaving the house at around 10:45 a.m.
