View Full Version : Searching for my first Porsche

Hey all
I posted here about two months ago since I was looking for my first Porsche. I've narrowed the field down to 1980-83 911 sc. I love the styling and its personality. I've looked at a couple, even got one a PPI but I'm still on the hunt.
I was wondering if any of you know someone selling their SC or 80's 911, that might not be on Craigslist , Rennelist, or pelican parts?
All the best

Hey Mike,
I don't know of one now but I along with the rest of us, will gladly keep an eye out for one. I applaud your restraint and believe you will be rewarded and find a good example.

What's your budget?
Does the 10,000 dollar SC exists anymore?
I'm willing to go to $20,000 for my SC. That is with knowing that I will have to put about 3k into it in the first year.
I like sc's with the turbo/ tea tray tail and either coupe or targa.
Thank you guys for your help and support.

Given your budget I would not rule out a 944, 968, boxster or a first gen 996. There are a lot of good cars out there selling at depressed prices.
The air cooled car prices even for the 911SC's are well north of 20k and these are older cars where unless your an experienced wrench budget another 5k plus to get the car sorted.

I'm not an experienced wrencher but it is something I'm interested in learning. I haven't totally ruled those out.
What I like about the SC is that it's pretty built proof and the feel and sound.
I did find a 914 on craigslist. It peaked my interest because it has the Chalon slant nose body kit which you don't see that often. And could be a good affordable first Porsche. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/cto/4821209926.html
I did a PPI on this Porsche but it need work and he wasn't willing to negotiate on the price.

I'm open to all ideas.

I will again suggest looking at Atlanta and further south. Check PCA Classifieds, Pelican, and Rennlist.
Ask for lots of high res pictures. PPI was a must for me.
Flight, hotel, PPI, gas home was well under $1,000. Savings vs what I found around here was much more than that.
Good luck!
I don't know about that 914 - looks like all Porsche parts, thought - Bumper/Valence from a 911SC, hood from a 944... Never heard of a "Chalon" but don't like what I see. That's what makes horse races.

May be worthwhile to check out. At 230,000 miles you might be looking at shocks, suspension bushings, new rubber window seals. The engine may have worn valve guides and rings, leaks, etc. Clutch? Brakes? A PPI will tell you lots. Accidents? Check that the panel gaps are even everywhere, once again a PPI is a must. If you like what you see you should probably move quickly as this may go quickly considering the price.

Looks good in the two pics. ppi will give tou alot if info. Miles are high but if the car is truley in good condidtion a engine refresh mught actually make since. The price imho seems right if the car is solid as represented. Id be curious to see the history on the car. Owners and where else he car spent its life outside of TX. If it has been a DD i would look at the body hard.

^^^^what you didnt like the convenience of screw driver start?lol
Also, what does "updated A/C" mean. If it means "converted to R134a" that means it will never cool again. It it means "added a 3rd condenser in front of the left rear wheel" then it will probably cool nicely, at least in less-humid Texas. Don't count on cool air from these cars in a hot and humid DC summer. But that is less than nicely-running SCs are going for these days.

SC's can still be had for under $20K. Just have to be patient. PPI is a must. Also, if you are set on driving it on the track, try to find one that has had some track mods. Roll bar, seats, suspension work will be nice. A 230K car most likely has at least had the top end rebuilt. If the seller has complete records, they should have receipts for major work. I would get a coupe especially if it's going to see the track.

Thank you guys for the support.
I took your advice and checked out a 1999 Base Boxster yesterday. I was really surprised how much a I enjoyed the car. The IMS was taking care of when he replaced the clutch. It has sport exhaust, headers, and a tuning chip.
Thoughts.

You could probably find a Boxster S for the same money.

SSSSssssssssssss Convertible - at least then you have an SC :)
Don't not buy a nice Boxster just because it isn't an "S". Base Boxsters are just as much fun. The 5 speed shifts better, parts are less $$, the urge to upgrade is diminished and they are less likely to have been driven hard/put away wet. It's also fun to beat (some of the) the "faster" cars at the autox with an underdog.

I have a friend down in VA Beach selling a 98 or 99 Boxster. A bunch of recent work, has a new top with glass rear window on it. Nice interior, all mechanicals gone through. I think he wants $8600 for it. Black on black.

I've attached the notes from the seller. It looks like he's done a lot of work. That's why he's asking 12k.
I don't want to overpay but I just want a great first Porsche.

I would encourage you to be patient and drive as many cars as you can (you are welcome to come out and drive my 3.2 SC Coupe). The search is a lot of fun.
I went from a 95 coupe, to a 75 targa, to an 86 cab and finally got to what I wanted, which was an SC coupe (and also have a project coupe as well). they all have their unique qualities and different issues. but they are all fun to drive...so take the time to do that. as the prices of the air cooled 911's seem to be going up it may take some time to find one that meets your budget requirements, but it will come along...As this might be the one and only Porsche you buy...take your time and figure out what you want and then go after that model car...a few grand isn't going to make that much difference in the grand scheme of things...if you are buying a car that is going up in value...just my 2 cents..

I think you guys are right. I might be trying to talk myself into buying a Boxster but that's not what I really want. I really want a track ready 911 sc!
I'm a very impatient person and sometimes I get sidetracked. I do appreciate all the input and feedback you guys have given.
I'd love to learn more about the maintenance and care of these cars so if anyone needs some free help with their car please let me know!
All the best

The shop guys basically steered me clear., I went to RPM It was about a page long and after that I decided not to move ahead and do the leak down test on the engine. I liked the car but it's worth about 15k or less with the work that needs to be done and I didn't even have them look at the engine because the owner wasn't willing to negotiate on the price.
It's a shame because it is original owner but it was the owners son selling it and he just let it go to waste. He is trying to buy a house with the money and wants the max down payment.

You're doing the right thing to be patient. If you haven't found something by mid April ( yeah that's a long time to be looking but) I recommend going to the Hershey PA Porsche annual swap meet the third Saturday of that month. There are always plenty of cars for sale there and usually some good deals. Also, being there you will be in Porsche nirvana and will certainly see and learn things all about the cars you might otherwise ever have... If you have a car by then you will probably be looking for a part or two for it and there is more than plenty of that as well... Good luck with your search. If the SC is what you want then go for it. If it were me I would only get a coupe, esp if it will ever see the track...

The good news is that you already have a Ford Focus ST which is a well handling hot hatch that you would have loads of fun with on a track or autocross course.
Worst case, why not auto-x or track the Focus until the right car comes along.
You'll have fun, get your feet wet and in the process develop clearer sense for the type of track driving experience your looking for which will help solidify your car choice.
As folks have said in prior posts be patient. Not easy to do but you will be rewarded with a well sorted car.

I'm not sure but I will follow up with John to see if it's available. I looked at this SC early on in my search and told him that I want to keep looking. Didn't want to buy the first SC I saw.
My only concerns were that it has been repainted, the Fuchs were painted black so it's not that originally. I really did like the look of he car though.
Would like to hear what you guys think about it? Does the price seem right?
I didn't do a PPI. I would like a second option if anyone knows about the car.

Price seems great. The wheels are an easyish fix and unless the respray is really bad I wouldn't sweat it. Get a PPI and if it checks out you are ready to hit the track.

Do you want a super original garage queen or a fun car you can track? That SC looked perfect for the latter use.

If the PPI doesn't raise any red flags, that car looks like a good deal. You will need to put proper race seats in to make use of the harnesses since they are a no no with stock seats.
...but at least one of those seats is included in the price.

Wow. I wonder what he means by "no power".
Poorly written ad but the term typically means no power accessories, i.e. windows, locks sunroof etc.. in this case I would assume the windows as they are standard crank.
Also, car appears to be euro spec judging from the rear bumper and particular cloth insert on seats.
Good luck!

No pics of engine bay, looks like it has some weight in there anyway. At that price would be really surprised if it ran.

Hey All,
I've decided to move on from the 80's 911 as my street/track car. I do appreciate all the input and help and I loved the search. I know one day that 911 will be in my garage.
After some life guidance and coaching from Tito, I'm thinking that an e30 or e36 fits my budget and life right now. I'm 28 years old and looking for a second car that I can get into motorsports with.
Having said that please let me know if you know of any for sale in the area.
All the best

If you're looking to get into DE/racing/track events, then a E36 or E46 M3 is a better option than a 80s vintage 911 IMO. Esp with the prices going ridiculous right now.

Not to slight the E30/36 cars, but a 944 spec or Spec (smash) Miata shouldn't be overlooked either imho and have relatively low entry points for racing.
