View Full Version : Lu's 73E - Engine Drop

Jim Richards

Hi all,

I'm going to drop the engine out of Lu's car so I can clean it up real well and make the recommended modification to the air deflectors. I'm hoping this will improve the oil temps prior to my planned installation of an external oil cooler. "While I'm in there," I'll do a valve adjustment, too.

For those of you that'll be around during the Memorial Day weeked, I'm planning on doing this on Saturday, May 24th. All are welcome to come on by. Liquid refreshments will be provided and I'll fire up the grille, too.

Richard, no Pabst pounders, please.

PS: If you miss the drop, I'm going to put it back in the following weekend.

Oh yeah, I also want to wrench on it to get it in real good shape for Lu. :D

Jim,

Let me know what you'll need from my garage.

I'm assuming the motorcycle and tranny lift. Anything else?

Jim Richards

Sorry Jim, but I'll have to catch you for the re-install. We already have out of town plans for Memorial Day weekend.

Hope everything goes well!

Jim, That's the weekend my son and I always go to the NCAA lacrosse tournament. This year it's in Baltimore. Sorry I won't be able to join in your fun, but I'm sure you can manage without my advice. I'll try to make your reinstall party though.

I'll try to make it. Should I bring my special locknut wrenches?

Jim, are you planning to install Carrera tensioners too? I'll be in FL buying my 993 next weekend, but may be able to swing by later Sunday to show it off. Otherwise, probably sometime the next weekend, though that's also the famous Tischer tech session.

Jim, are you planning to install Carrera tensioners too?
No, the PO put new hydraulic (non-pressure-fed) tensioners in last fall.

Here is all I've seen of the car I'm buying:

It's pretty much identical to Jim's except for the basket handle 3rd brake light - and it will see redline every single day!

Did he put the collars on them as well ?? Cheap insurance if he didn't.

Marc, good question...I think I remember that the collars were put on; however, I'm not positive. I'll have to check my records.

OK guys, who's in for an engine drop this Saturday AM?

Jim,

I should be avail. Shoot me a PM as I'd like to get the jack, lift, etc. to you prior to the weekend just in case something comes up last minute and I can't make it on Sat.

Hi Charlie,

The Dorkiphus e-mail (private or otherwise) isn't working for me. Don't know why. I sent you a regular email to your yahoo account. Let me know if you don't receive it.

Sorry Jim, our plans are unchanged so we'll be out of town for Sat & Sun. Good luck with everything.

Jim Richards

No problem Doug E. Maybe we'll see you the following weekend for the re-insertion.

Charlie, or anyone, can I borrow your oil line wrench(es)?

Well, I tried to convince my sister that this weekend was not a good weekend to have her first child, since there was going to be an engine drop I wanted to attend. Can you believe she had the nerve to call me insensitive!! Whatever, I stopped listening months ago anyway.

I'm just kidding - But my sister is being induced on Friday morning, so I am heading up to CT to see my first niece. Have a great time this weekend, and if you’re lucky, maybe Lu will cook something (if you can get her out from under the car).

Jim, what's the schedule and where is your place? I can come by late Sat morning to offer moral support!

Jim Richards

I'm thinking about a 10am start. Earlier or later arrival is good, too. I'll try to have some of the work knocked out in advance to keep Saturday's event short.

I live in Sterling, VA. If you're coming from the east, just head west on Rt7, past Reston a few miles. When you pass Fairfax Cty. Parkway (Rt 7100), you know you're within a couple of miles. Anyway, keep heading west on Rt 7 until you see the the signs for Cascades Parkway. Take the ramp to North Cascades Pkwy. As you're going north on Cascades Pkwy, you'll pass Home Depot (on your right side) and pass through 1 traffic light. The first right turn beyond that traffic light is Summerhill Place. Turn right onto Summerhill and then procede 2 short blocks and turn right again onto Solomons Ct. My house is the 2nd on the left - 20904 Solomons Ct. You can reach me on my cell 703.851.2957 if need be.

See you later...

Hi guys, it looks like everything's coming together for tomorrow's engine drop.

Jim Richards

It's out! Thanks to Tom, Dan, Marc, Clay, Dave, and H.B. for helping pull this off. I'd also like to thank Marc, Dave Riley, and Charlie for supplying much needed specialty tools.

For more on the engine drop, including my slightly embarrassing goof-up on the order of pics, see the Pelican thread http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=111997

Jim--

Thanks for asking. I'm writhing in excruciating physical pain. And feeling extreme anguish and mental suffering. My dream of playing professional football has been shattered. I have nightmares over the possibility of amputation. I have become addicted to the painkillers I have taken in an unsuccessful attempt to lessen the devastating impact this injury has had on my life, which has become a living hell. Other than that, things are ok. It's my right knee, so I can still shift. That is all that's keeping the damages in the hundreds of thousands as opposed to millions.

That's regular--no decaf.

Jim Richards
05-28-2003, 11:08 AM
Oh yeah, I'm a decaf guy. Glad to hear it's better. Please let me know if that changes...we can't have any of our group hobbled by errant motors.

Jim Richards

I think it'll be either June 14th or 15th. I have tech the following weekend for the July 4-6 DE so I need to wrap things up by mid June.

Isn't it funny how these things allways take longer once the engine is out of the car

If you need any help with the engine, let me know!
