This is one of my rear tires on my AWD BMW. What is this pattern telling me? Inside edge and outside edge.

Get the junk out of the trunk. While not an answer, how many miles on the tires? how often are they rotated? can they be rotated front/rear or only left/right?
Is the wear consistent on all 4 corners?
I imagine on a BMW the "performance" bit is why you are getting more wear on the inside edges.

I move them front to back at oil change time....about every 5000 miles. They are a few years old, don't recall exactly. Other rear looks similar. Fronts look "OK"

How old are your struts/shocks? Also, check for a worn bushing, I'm not familiar with e46 awd suspension but I suspect the rear is standard issue. Some common wear items back there.

BMW E36 323is Rear Trailing Arm Bushing Failure - YouTube
I dunno if the E46 AWD have the same RTAB design, but this video shows how much movement you get at the Rear Trailing Arm Bushing when they fale. If you find that you need to replace and the part is similar to the E36, let me know. I have a homade tool to press out the old bushing.

40k on the suspension. RTAB supposedly corrected by 04 models. Though I did change rear shocks in January after a failure. I have a vibration in the steering....don't know if guibo or alignment related. I might as well just take it in.

I thought you had a scissor lift? Raise the car, grab each wheel and wiggle it around, find the one that's loose. Could be as simple as a worn out ball joint, tie rod end, etc. WYIT inspect the guido for cracks.
