I'm thinking about getting an X5 and towing once in a while to the far tracks with it. I have looked at some without a hitch and looked into adding one. Anyone ever seen or used this device?

I have been towing with my X5 both a 4.8i and now a 35D. Both have the factory hitch and brake controller and tow very nicely. I would spring for the factory hitch for piece of mind.

I couldn't listen to the audio (in a meeting) but if you're towing a car, use nothing less than Class 3 and probably a Class 4 hitch. That one in the video doesn't look all that beefy. Unless you're just thinking of towing a golf cart of light boat...

Sorry not exactly helpful to your question but why X5? Why not a used Cayenne S with tow package already installed?

X5 is a very capable vehicle but I think the Cayenne is more comfortable and is also more nimble. We've had both in the family and everyone agrees they like Cayenne better than X5. Also know that the X5 we had was an 2004 4.4L model that had tons of problems, especially with the air suspension which eventually was entirely replaced (all four struts and the main compressor).

Apologies for thread drift but though you should know.

Both Cayenne S and X5 come with or without tow hitches sometimes. I'm looking a both but since I live 60 min from SP, the real towing would be bikes, neighbors utility trailer and a long tow to the far tracks once a year. I have a really short commute so looking at the most "value" for the buck and I just found that the X5s with diesel aren't as big as I thought.....having a hard time giving up a sedan as my DD.

A computerized trailer hitch?

Just get one of these, or something similar

The big thing is not the computer but that you don't have to cut the bumper. Its not that bjg a deal to cut the bumper to me, but to some folks it really is. Would have been a cool thing for my car had they made it for my year.

Find a used domestic 2WD V8 pickup on CL, keep the sedan?

Here's two with a tow package. Only mean to say these are out there, not hard to find.

Seems like the specs and near $800 price would be a limiting factor too.

that much money on a hitch seems exorbitant (unless it includes the cost of a trans cooler and the cost of cutting the rear bumper, lol). does it support standard hitch balls (so you can swap depending on the trailer--car trailer vs. small utility trailer), and does it support standard attachments that fit a 2" receiver, such as bike carriers, etc., or will you be required to buy execu-pricey adapters and implements?

"ExecuHitch will integrate your vehicle into your world." That's a serious claim right there.

I didn't watch the whole video but it doesn't look like it has enough subframe tie in to support a 6K towing capacity. The shot I saw looked like it was mounted by two ~3/4" bolts spaced 6" apart.

I'll be honest, I couldn't make it all the way through either. What is interesting is that in regular towing, the whole mess relies on that one pin that holds the ball mount to the square socket.

I doubt I will be buying this, but it is kinda interesting. It's manly to have a cut up bumper and a trailer hitch. Separates the men from the the moms out shopping. Or something. I remember when all the explorers were fitted with tiny class 2 hitches from the factory. Probably something the lawyers and marketers compromised on. "Hey, you can tow (1)"

(1) Not really.

I'd change that to.. just get a damn pickup and dont worry about it.

Where do the safety chains and load stabilizer bars attach too?

Fine for bikes, maybe small utility trailers, but imho, not enough for 4-5-6K lb pulls.
