I've had the twisted seat problem on my e39 for a while now. Now that my daughter is driving and has a very different seating than me, I'd really like to fix it.

My driver side is twisting for both the backrest and vertical adjustments. It looks like there's a lot of info out there and I looked at it a little last night. I'm going to try reading up some more tonight. I was planning to ask for some help on this given my lack of skills, but I think I may give it a try by myself tomorrow morning.

Have any dorkis done this repair? Any recommendations?

Step 1 may be an issue. I'm not sure if I can get the seat level to begin with. I guess I should first try to level and fix the bottom seat, then level and fix the back rest.

I'm stuck. Seat is stuck with the inner side all the way down. Not enough room to cut the cable insulation with the seats in. Can't get to the screw holding down the plastic trim that covers the bolt for the front inside part of the seat. I can get a socket on it, but not enough room to turn it.

Mini ratchet set that included torx sockets from Sears did the trick to get the trim out. Undid the seats, leaned them forward, and worked from the back. Got it done, although the backrest ended up a bit crooked. Still need to do passenger side.

Second side is supposed to work out better. Not so much this time. Must have cut the wrong cable for the vertical adjustment, and I don't know what I did wrong but the backrest ended up more crooked than the driver side. I'll have to take it all out to try to fix better at some point. Will need to wait until I get a full free day.

My apologies to whoever my daughter gets as an instructor at next week's street survival. I suggest you have her go counter clockwise on the skidpad, you won't have to work to stay in the seat.

John:

Post up some pics.

I haven't had to do this on my E39 but I know it is coming.

Lots of good DIYs out there in E39 section of Bimmerforums and Bimmerfest.

HD and Lowes improvised clamp / mods too in some of the posts.

Cheers.
